Well this is just wrong. Clapton is definitely known for his tone control and while he may not be the most "technical" guitarist out there, he sure does come close to being the most soulful, which in my opinion is way better then some guy just ripping through scales as fast as he can.

This is one of my favorite clapton interviews. Old school days.

I agree 100%. Clapton is great.

So are many others.

I'm not big on Mayer's stuff, but there is no denying his talent. I love when he covers some good classic rock, a la Jimi Hendrix.
