Oh I think the list is longer as well but those are 5 that proves he is not in the top 5 currently

Yup. I think too many people got caught up in the "his radio stuff sucks and he's a douche but he's really underrated as a guitar player" thing in regards to Mayer. It went from "he's underrated and actually pretty damn good...you see him play with Clapton?" to "He's amazing and probably better than Clapton!!!" in a course of 5 years or so.

trying to find 5 people as good as he is would be a VERY hard thing to do

You could do it on YouTube in about 3 minutes.

There are guitarists on YouTube that are better than any of the guitarists mentioned in this thread. What point do you hope to make?

I like Mayer's music, and enjoy his playing. He's a great guitar mind, undoubtedly, and I've enjoyed him in concert. That being said, to call him top 5 in the world is laughable.

When I listen to Mayer's Continuum, I can definitely hear the influence. Especially on instrumental tracks like Lenny and some of the slower stuff. Sorry you can't hear it.

I can agree with this as any attempt to objectively and conclusively call someone or something the best in the world is equally if not more laughable.

What do you consider good in a guitarist? Originality? Improvisational skills? Speed? Etc

Posted by The Dude's Rug I saw North MS All-Stars when they came to the Varsity. The black guy that played for a few songs was way better than Luther. All I heard was Luther hype leading up to the concert and was disappointed.

"That black guy" is alvin youngblood hart, i was there too. And If you thought ayh was better than luther than your opinion doesnt mean much to me honestly. Ayh is very good guitarist, but no where near luthers level.

my analogy stands

I was there, watched the whole concert, and Luther wasn't anything mind blowing. I'm not saying he was bad, because the dude can play. But the black guy was more entertaining and more impressive to me and everyone around me.
