Wasn't putting Mayer on Claptons, who is one of the all-time greats, level by no means, was saying its a similar playing style. He's also heavily SRV/Hendrix influenced.

I do think automatically saying he's not one of the best today is subjective. Many do think this, including Clapton, Buddy, BB and so on. See him live, really. Trucks would be at the top of list followed by Bonamassa, but Mayer goes into my top 5 for younger players.

What makes John Mayer a great guitar player is his tastefulness. There's thousands of guitar players out there with his chops I'm sure. But to have that ability and not over play and actually be tasteful and creative and care about tone is a true gift.

This is displayed masterfully on the "Continuum" album. It would have been so easy to just shred and show out on most of those songs. His restraint on the guitar is one of the things that made that album great.

I agree with this. It also allows him to put on some incredible live shows that vary from the albums. I've seen him live twice and both times I was absolutely stunned. I've seen Derrick Trucks, Warren Haynes, and Gary Clark Jr., and Mayer was right there talent wise at the lives shows. He's also one of the cleanest guitarists I've heard. His solos are flawless.

Speaking of Gary Clark Jr, who is one of my favorites along with the others named, this is my first time seeing this. They get a little jumpy at parts, but outstanding stuff nonetheless.

John Mayer has said one of his major influences was Stevie Ray Vaughan. He has an SRV tattoo on his shoulder

Just because you don't hear it doesn't mean it isn't there! It's like a dog whistle

Plenty of licks in this, that are very much SRV influenced. This is how he played it, of course, SRV did it better.

I advise anyone that thinks the man can't play to watch the above video. If you can honestly tell me he's not top tier for the younger guys, and give a legit reason, I'll stop.

No one ever claimed he was just another average guitarist.

We've all stated that he is a terrifically talented guitarist however Clapton he is not and he isn't even the Clapton of his day.

don´t forget Blind Faith. Only one álbum, but oh what an álbum. BF also had Stevie Winwood and Ginger Baker. He may get a fourth, albeit posthumously.
