Who would you compare John Mayers guitar skills to?

Preferably someone from at least 20 -40 years back.
I would say he plays similar to clapton but mayers albums all have different tones to them. A few songs from the born and raised album sounds like something the allman brothers would create.

I love the Mayer hater's. Look, you can think he's some tool, that's fine, but he's easily one of the best there is right now at playing guitar. You don't know shite about music if you can sit there and say he doesn't know how to play.
I'd compare him to a Clapton.
Comparisons to me, for some of the known younger guys.
Trucks: Duane, easy to see this.
Mayer: Clapton, catchy tunes, but a really diverse set of songs. Can tackle several genres.
Clark Jr and White.: Remind me of a Hendrix. Extremely raw sound, and lots of charisma (more so fits with White). Page's sound would be another one I'd compare to White.
Bonamassa: I'd say SRV, extremely technical, yet can play so aggressive and still hit the notes.

He's been really into Grateful Dead and Allman Bros as of late. Chuck Leavell (played keys for the Allman Bros) actually did the keys on Born and Raised.
This song is undoubtedly Allman influenced Queen of California

Ima throw Robert Cray in there. Smooth, clean Stratofortress.

Lol at mayer haters. You will not find one respectable musician that doesn't have respect for mayers talent. His off stage conduct is subjective and really hard to critique cause no e of us have been there. He reminds me of Clapton but I think is a more creative song writer. Stuff like "stop this train" and "edge of desire" are freakin genius.

Hes a good guitarist, one of best alive, meh.
Also, hes no clapton.
Nobody is writing 'mayer is god' on any walls in this country.
Like i said hes a good guitarist, but his talent lies somewhere between the fanboys and haters opinions.

Well I took that more of comparing their playing styles than actual skill level.
But if they're actually referring to skill level...... Then dear baby Jesus save us all

What exactly sets clapton so far apart from mayer?

you means besides from the point that clapton was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame 3 times.
if this is a serious question, i hope you're like 15 and just need some knowledge dropped on you.
maybe you've heard of cream or blind faith or derek and the dominos. if clapton was only apart of ONE of those bands, his career would already be more than mayers, but clapton was in all THREE.
theres also this, Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time".
let me know what john mayer has done, thanks!
