He doesn't have a style as recognizable at let's say a Hendrix, and nor would I put him close to the guy, but he has a recognizable tone and his own style. He has taken from the people he's looked after, as all musicians do, and transferred it into his own. The dude loves hammer-ons, pull-offs and barre chords. By the way, any person that doesn't think he's one of the best young guys has NOT seen him live.

I too once thought he was just some pop guy, being that I had heard maybe 2 songs, but I took a girlfriend to see him a long time ago. She left disappointed because he didn't play "Your Body Is A Wonderland" I left with a new found respect and appreciation for just how damn good he is. I instantly became a huge fan, and really started to listen. If you won't see him live, at least watch Where the Light Is.

Lots of posters on here that have no idea what they're talking about WRT guitar playing ability. And as a previous poster said, you can literally spend 2 minutes on YouTube and find 50 guys under 20 that are better than any guitarist named in this thread.

you are correct. clapton is widely considered one of the best guitarist ever and had been for the last 40 years. Mayer is very talented. there is no comparison between the 2 and to continue to argue that mayer is in anyway better is ridiculous

Lol

Just stating that those are his main licks, forgot to add that he likes to do that across multiple strings. Instead of a hammer-on, on let's say the E string, it'd be on the B and E, or any spots that line up on the pentatonic scales.

As someone who has learned many of his songs on guitar, I can attest to this. It's more so the chord structure hammer-ons though. Pretty much any blues guitarist worth a damn has at least a couple of these in his repertoire though.

Good vid, and an outstanding talent, but I've heard better from Mayer than this. Oh, and I'd like to see him sing and play this, and write his own songs. Let's leave that out.

I'd love to see that guy put on a performance, something like this. LINK. It's not just about skill, it's about phrasing and knowing what sounds good. The fact that Mayer holds back like he does is tasteful.

That guy couldn't come close to writing a song, nor performing it like this either. LINK

Mind blown.

Next you're going to tell me about this crazy thing he does where he bends the string up to reach a higher note.

So all guitarists like to mainly use multiple strings at a time for hammer ons and pull offs? That's actually not something you normally hear. He has a definite style, that's my point. I could hear him start playing guitar, and Id know its him.

If you wanna actually talk music, then do so instead of being a dick.

So many people posting here that have no clue.

I appreciate Clapton, but he really isn't any where near the talent level of many mainstream guitarist these days. If you think otherwise, you have no idea what you're talking about. Learn something about skill other than basic blues and pentatonic scales.

He does hammer-ons and pulls offs... OMG

not clapton, unless you are comparing the power of guitar to get top notch trim. maybe Jimmy Paige, but Mayer would come out of the losing end of that comparison. the playing is not similar, but reaction from the public might be... probably not though

Ok cool guy.

What about tone? Clapton has one of the best ever.

No denying that. And I'll echo anyone in here saying that Mayer is in no way close to Clapton. I completely agree.

I was just pointing out that he is highly skilled, versatile and definitely has his own style/way of doing things.

That has nothing to do with his skill cool guy. That's all about the $$.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Clapton and almost everything he's ever done, but he isn't some mystical once in a lifetime guitarist.
