Used to ride around very late at night listening to KAAY
Growing up in the rural Midwestern sticks away from any major media market, I learned a lot about what different types of music was being played only from listening to KAAY.
The late night, clear channel AM sound was the only real non-pop rock station available to me.
It was the first 'deep cut' station that I had ever heard and am still thankful to the owners for helping to mold and form my young brain!!!

I grew up in a house where my parents were music aficionados. We had a very good stereo system and I heard all kinds music - jazz, big band, early rock, Cajun, movie soundtracks…etc. Very little country music.
This one helped me learn to love country music:

“Pet Sounds”
It came out ten years before I was born. Parents graduated from high school in the early 60’s so The Beach Boys, Buddy Holly, Every Brothers, etc. we’re right in their wheelhouse. Pet Sounds was always an enigma to me from a very early age. I liked it but never quite understood why. By the time I got a bit older I knew it was great but didn’t know why. As I got older and older it finally it clicked…holy hell, this is genius. Now for over thirty years I revisit it a few times a year and I am still blown away by it.
A few other albums that will always make me stop and think when I give them a spin (but not to the degree that Pet Sounds does) are:
Megadeth’s “Rust in Peace”
Velvet Underground’s “White Light/White Heat”
Ray Charles’ “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music”
Buddy Guy’s “Damn Right I’ve Got the Blues”
Paul Simon’s “Rhythm of the Saints”
Television’s “Marquee Moon”
They Might Be Giants “Lincoln”
Saigon Kick’s “The Lizard”

Keith Whitley, I was a rocker before that, and enjoy a lot of different genres, but that album my brother gave me of Keith Whitley really changed me to more of a Country genre, forever…

We're about the same age, and that Dire Straits album is a major touchstone for me.
Knopflers style, while not really brand new, was not at all common and I had never really heard that before. It kind of took my breath away, as silly as that may sound.
Where in North Louisiana? I spent nearly 2 years working up in Cotton Valley in the late 90s, staying in Minden most of the time. It's certainly different than South Louisiana. There were some beautiful areas up there, just a different type of beauty.

Rolling Stones "Some Girls" and Rush "2112" were big ones for me in my adolescence along with Skynyrd's "One More From the Road" and Zepplin's 4th album and I was a rock music fan for life
