I was at a thrift store and bought a Fleetwood Mac CD for a dollar and looked them up on Wikipedia to familiarize myself with their member history. I was surprised to see that Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House) was an official member in their latter touring years.

I did the same thing when I bought a Blood Sweat and Tears album at a thrift store and saw on Wikipedia that Bo Bice of early American Idol fame was the lead singer for a while.

Juan Croucier is on Dokken's first album but left to join Ratt. He's not even in their first video.

David Coverdale/Deep Purple
Randy Bachman (BTO)/The Guess Who
Peter Frampton/Humble Pie

I'm sure there are many others but those are three off the top of my head.

One that I've always known but probably many don't:

J Tillman, otherwise known as Father John Misty, was the drummer for Fleet Foxes, and has since become more popular than the band he left. I loved Fleet Foxes first EP and Album. Their follow up was ok but they have been a huge disappointment since.

Iconic 80's producer and singer of the Buggles (Video Killed the Radio Star), Trevor Horn, was actually lead singer for YES for one album when Jon Anderson had quit.

When I saw him, he was playing for Whitesnake. The tour line-up was David Coverdale, Vivian Campbell, Adrian Vandenberg, Rudy Sarzo, and Tommy Aldridge. A bunch of dudes who have played in a bunch of other bands.

Boz Scaggs was in the Steve Miller band early on. They went to the same high school.

Many probably know this, but Robert Smith was in the Cure and in Siouxsie & the Banshees at the same time.

Jimmy Page was a popular session guitarist before Zeppelin (albeit not a group member and rarely made the credits)-
quote:

Whether it was jamming on a rock track with the Kinks, the Rolling Stones or the Who, playing the blues with Otis Spann, or providing the backbone to pop hits by Marianne Faithfull and Shirley Bassey, Page was a true Renaissance man who had little trouble handling any style that came his way. And while the full scale of Page’s session discography may never really be known, there are more than enough compelling examples to prove the significance of the future icon’s early work.

Rolling Stone - Jimmy Page before Zeppelin

Didn't know he played guitar on Joe Cocker version of With a Little Help from my Friends.
