Always thought it was the opposite...

Dallas is remembered for who shot J.R.

Dynasty is remembered for catfights.

Dynasty DVD complete series is about 30,000 higher rank than Dallas on Amazon sales.

Dynasty clips and plots were prominently featured in a recent episode of The Goldbergs.

Who Shot JR. It's up there with the final episode of MASH in most anticipated/watched shows ever.

Because Dallas was the first (by about 3 years).

What I mean by "the first" isn't that it was the first prime time soap opera on tv, there had been others. It's that it was the first to pull in both female AND male viewers in large numbers, it pretty much created the idea of season-ending cliffhangers ("Who shot JR?" was huuuuuuuuuge), it was one of the earliest shows to have continuity as its core rather than be episodic and other similar shows were created based on its mold and due to its success (Dynasty, Knots Landing and Falcon Crest being the most memorable).

Dallas started off as a Romeo & Juliet story (Bobby & Pam) with the two families being oil tycoons. Its real success came in when they added to the Barnes/Ewing fight by creating another level of good-v-evil with Bobby opposing JR.

It also had a very successful spin-off in Knots Landing (both Dallas and Knots Landing lasted 14 seasons and also had multiple times characters crossed over to appear in the other show, which was extremely rare back then).

And ironically they had to stop that after Dallas' dream season because it would have wiped out the previous season of Knots too.

Dallas was original and Dynasty was derivative IIRC.

Dallas was the iconic soap opera of the late 70s and the 1980s.

Who shot JR and Bobby appearing in the shower are two major cultural references from the 80s.

Not sure what Dynasty’s lasting legacy has been other than a bunch of Joan Collins jokes in Bloom County and the show being a punchline on The Orville.

Lucy looked great at the time but it is squicky in hindsight that she was fricking Ray, who was later revealed as her half-uncle.

the "dream" season idea was used later on Newhart.

Newhart took it to a new level by making the entire series a dream to the previous Newhart series.

Probably a double “take that” at Dallas and the infamous St Elsewhere “snow globe” ending.

I don’t think Dynasty gets forgotten. They just a reboot of it fairly recently.
