Going to the new release section 4 different times to just make sure you didn't skip over the one VHS out of the 15 that wasn't rented yet for some specific movie
Staring at the gaming section and deciding which game to rent based on how badass the cover looked

My local video store was also a pizza restaurant. Friday nights during my middle school years were great. Get a pizza, rent movies like Heavyweights or Major Payne. Also TGIF was a thing then.

I forgot they did that.
We also had a pizza joint with a big projector screen that played movies all day long in the middle of the place...arcade machines lining each side...and you could rent movies to take home with your pizza.

I really miss renting NES games. I miss the magic of that old Nintendo. I'd be so excited on a Friday evening going pick out a game. Zelda and Millipede were the first games I ever rented.

Renting a movie based strictly on how cool the VHS cover looked. Always went home with a horror movie.

I worked at a Blockbuster for about 2 years. I had two goals at that job.
First one was finding the best softcore in the place. We were allowed to rent 5 movies at once, so I went through almost the whole store. Got to watch a lot of things I would of never watched. Blockbuster didn't have hardcore, but the Eros branded softcores seemed to show the most.
Second was pissing off the lying arse customers. You know who you are, the ones that always blame the late fees on us (employees) or the computers. Your lies were shite and I loved making you go off the handle about them. Little known fact about Blockbuster, your late time that we told you was in fact about 12 hours before the actual late time. Usually you were told a midnight late time, well the real time was noon the next day. The morning shift would go through the return box and make sure everything was checked in and there was nothing in the box before we opened. If you got a late fee and tried to fight it with me, I would just laugh and make you pay. I had people talking to my managers often, but they thought it was hilarious because they knew I was right.
It was also fun looking up what people rented in the computer system.

I looked online and the closest movie store is 25 minutes from us. I want to take my kids there but i dont want the hassle of going all the way back to return it.
they need to experience what we did as a kid. Its not the same to press "rent" from the DIRECTV remote or go to Netflix.

-asking if the movie I wanted was behind the counter
-gaming marathon to beat the due date
-wondering how much money they were making on video games because that bitch was like $8 a rental
-do I really wanna play Halo that bad that I want to rent a Xbox

The first one in my hometown was called Star Video. This was in the early 80's and when they'd get a new release, they'd only get one copy. You had to get on a waiting list. All the tapes were kept behind the counter, and you just brought the box from the shelf to check one out. They also had a porn section through a door in the back of the store. Mom caught me trying to sneak in there once.
I can't remember what movie it was, but my dad was on the waiting list for like months. We got back from vacation and he called the store, and they told him they tried calling him but couldn't get in touch with him so they bumped him off the list. Obviously this was before cell phones and even answering machines. Answering machines may have been around, but we didn't have one. He was so pissed.

Going into the store and starting on one side of the store and just walking slowing, scanning every shelf of the New Release section til you got to the other end of the store about 10-15 minutes later...and having to do it again after putting some "finalists" in your head.

Man I used to spend SO MUCH time looking as well.
I also remember seeing a movie I may want, but there was only one left, so I would pick it up and walk around with it for 45 minutes so nobody could frick me out of renting it.
Used to rent an NES game every time I went and spent the night at one of my friend's house. We would almost always rent Black Bass on NES, and play it almost all night. For whatever reason, we fricking LOVED that game.
Also remember being at my buddy's camp on False River a lot of weekends, and we would always rent three movies. A scary one, a kiddy/cartoon one (for after we watched the scary one
), and then Revenge of the Nerds ( 
). Our parents never had a clue.. "We've got bush.....we've got bush."

One of the biggest surprises I ever had renting a video game was Super Dodge Ball on NES. Me and my buddy figured we'd give it a try, and we had a blast and played that thing all damn night long. It was awesome.

This. We also would print out a list of late movies to check to see if they were put out without checking them in.

Buddy and I had a similar experience with some game called Bubble Bobble. We rented it as a joke, and ended up loving it. Pretty sure he went out and even bought it a few weeks later.
I was never a "gamer" so maybe that game was popular. I don't know. We had never heard of it, and fell in love with it.

If you were nice, I would take care of your late fees for you. If you were a dick, there were ways we could frick with you.
We had a lesbian couple who would make baked goods from scratch as a hobby. They never paid for rentals as long as they brought me brownies.
And if you were a cop, you got free rentals. And I would tell them that if they ever wanted to hang out in the store in uniform, I would give them a free rental and a coke. We rarely had problems with shoplifters. And if I ever had to call 911, half of the JP police department would show up to make sure we were ok.
