My PawPaw owned the shopping center that our local video store was in. On Fridays after school we would go visit him at his drug store and he would always ask us how our grades were that week then give us some money to walk down the sidewalk to the video store. My little brother and I would alternate on who rented the movies and who rented the games.

This movie cover will always stick out in my head

Loved that tan bag with 5 VHS tapes in it. Sleepover in affect with Dad getting some fried shrimp dinners.

Predator
Spaceballs
Robocop
Lost Boys
Masters of the Universe

Got some popcorn, twizzlers, RC cola. Playing Mario after those movies were watched over the weekend.

Miss that shite man

Those were better days

We would order a pizza, get a two liter of Mountain Dew and that's all she wrote

Not a worry in the world

I remember in the 80's to early 90's we used to have to call the video store ...(Mom and Pop joint) and see if they had the movie...(they had one copy of popular movies, sometimes two but that was it) - but you could reserve the movie over the phone for that night.

Also, they literally had a section titled: T&A.

Filled with the usual R-rated 80's/90's suspects.

And they would fine you for not rewinding as most places did. Every movie came in a black case with nothing written on it. They would have the VHS movies hanging on the walls - the cases with velcro and then put one velcro tab with the title on a little mettalic button. You would pull the round tag like a soda pop cap off the empty VHS movie and bring it to the front desk...they'd put it in a black titles-less case as if you were renting a porno.

How awesome it was, how long it took me to decide on the game I was going to choose despite it being the only thing I thought about that entire day at school, how my mom kept bugging me to hurry, how deflated I was if the game I chose sucked and I knew it was gonna be another week, or two or three, before I would have a chance to redeem myself, the glory of beating a game before it had to go back.

Girl I dated (later became my wife) used to work at one of the local, non big-chain stores (S&R). I used to hang around up there with her.

We used to laugh on Sundays; they had a large section of porn, and there'd be a run of guys who'd come in and rent one Sunday mornings, right about the time folks went to church... and then drop it off when the services were about to let out.

I remember going right after a movie I wanted to see came out on VHS. They would have one section of shelves with nothing but that one movie and when you noticed the one movie box that still had the VHS behind it you felt like you just hit the lottery. I remember that happened with the first ninja turtles movie came out. There was one copy left and I got it.

The cool thing was you had no internet, so you had no clue what the New Releases would be. Movies or games.

I tried to explain it to my 13 year old son, but I just can't get across how awesome it was. It was soooo awesome to pick a movie out with a girl on a Friday night.

I remember a "movie party" when we all watched Interview with a Vampire. My Son doesn't know what's what

Best thing was browsing the shelves and finding cool, weird older movies I never would have heard of.

One of my favorite discoveries was this 1970's blacksploitation movie called "Coonskin" that mixed live action and animation. Yall should watch the trailer: youtube

One scene in particular managed to merge American racial tensions with the danger of chlamydia: Oh, she got the clap...

Alot of posters already hit most. Man, those were the days. Renting SNES, Sega Saturn and N64 games. Me and brother would usually always go for the horror section. Saw every Friday 13th and Nightmare movies.

Yep, all of it.

Me and Broham on here, were way too young to be renting Faces of Death, but we sure did

Asking the video store clerks if I could have the posters after they were done with them.

Making sure to rewind movies or else you get charged extra.

I remember asking the old man clerk/owner if this movie was any good?

And he looked at me with disdain and said:

"Why would I know if that movie is any good? It looks like shite. You gonna rent something today?"

Goes to show you not everything is better with technology. I was talking to a buddy about this last week.

It was so cool going with your girl to pick out a movie and then going back to mom and dad's to watch it "and chill". Still felt like you were going out on a date.

Something about a red box or iTunes just doesn't have the same appeal.

The curse of the video store was the hope of something different or new just popping out...before they had "new releases" sections.

You would walk up and down the aisles, over and over again...expecting to something different.

You could spend an hour in a video store without even realizing it.
