I remember going into blockbuster and buying CDs as a kid. Everything from The Beatles and Bob Dylan to Nas and Rage Against the Machine. The clerk actually started to say something about how cool my mom was for letting me get the Rage cd but I started daggers at him to shut up. I thought it would be so cool to work there and I eventually did. It wasn't as cool as I'd hoped.

First tape I recall being released with a straight to consumer price tag was Keaton's Batman. Before then, yeah...could be close to $100.

I don't know the first VHS tape release to mass market but that's a good trivia question.

But that's why E.T. was able to be re-released in 1985 (just two years later) and make another $60 million.

ETA: just found out

The first three American flicks released on VHS? The Sound of Music, Patton, and M*A*S*H (at an average retail cost of $50-$70, each).

A small 2007 run of Eragon is apparently the last VHS tape to be released.

The worst was when you were trying to rent a T&A film or softcore sex-comedy...

And the girl behind the counter would just stare at you and ask how old you were and you'd say it was for your parents.
