I don't look at him as a great actor but an entertaining one. Plus he does a good job of picking roles (aside from The Mummy). Dude is nuttier than a fruitcake but if he's in a movie you'll probably enjoy it.

shite, I remember thinking he was awesome in Jerry Maguire and thinking he got snubbed for an Oscar that year. And weirdly enough, I caught some of JM on TV last night and he is great in it. Sure, you could argue he was "playing Tom Cruise," but I think he did better than just that.

If you can't sit back and appreciate the unapologetic 80s cheesiness of Cocktail, then I don't know what to tell you.
I actually think it's a great movie (for what it is). But I've always liked it. But despite that, it's nowhere near worst movies of all time level. But opinions are like assholes...
As for my 10 worst, I don't have a list. But Cabin Fever and Freddie Got Fingered would definitely be on there.

Without question. Never seen him in a role I didn’t believe him in. Great hero, great villain, great as an Everyman, great as an elitist, great at comedy. Nothing he hasn’t done well.

He's probably the most successful actors we've seen in the past 4+ decades. Whatever he's done, whatever genre, he's putting things at the top of that genre. And he's maintained for a long, long time. We've seen other actors with runs of stardom (Will Smith, Kevin Costner, Keanu Reeves etc), but nobody has stayed at the top like Cruise has.
I think he's underrated as an actor, because of his popularity. It's almost impossible for him to take a role and not be "Tom Cruise" onscreen, as soon as you recognize him. But take something like Tropic Thunder where he played Les Grossman... that was fricking crazy. Total opposite of what he normally plays. I wouldn't have guessed in a million years he had that in him.

What’s crazy is that character was created by Tom Cruise. Tom came up with the idea after reading the script for his friend, Ben, That tells me Tom just isn’t a good actor, he understands what makes movies work.
