This board typically wants to proclaim a Tom Hanks as one of the greatest actors ever. By those standards, Tom Cruise is number 1, no question.
Is it greatest Actor or greatest actor? The problem is by looking only at acting range and ability to absorb a character, you leave out a large part of what being an actor is. If you limit standards to just the acting part - Cruise probably isn't too 10, and has a mediocre argument for top 20.
If you go with the all around approach, I'm not sure anyone really beats him though. Jimmy Stewart is probably with him. I'm not sure anyone else is.

Greatest actors? No. One of the top box office stars? That’s definitely fair to say. The guy can make a box office hit.

He's the best at accepting roles for sure.

Like I said before, most of his roles he's playing Tom Cruise as X. The rich kid from Risky Business grows up and becomes the pilot in Top Gun, goes into JAG as the lawyer for A Few Good Men, becomes the MI6 operative after his military service, etc. Seems close enough to be the same guy (not actually in story, but you know what I mean).
But Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder is a much different character, and he absolutely owned that. I remember the first time I watched that, I didn't know who it was. Dude was stealing every scene he's in, and I'm thinking "who is that, he looks kinda familiar? Something about his eyes, and the intensity..."
I guess that's the thing- Tom Cruise is, at least, the most intense actor I've ever seen.

Most people confuse "the most acting" with "the best acting". Of course Tom Cruise is one of the best actors of all time.

I'm not dunking on Tom. I like his work. On several levels. He's impressed me with his commitment, stunt work and dedication to getting the best projects to the screen as possible.
He's a very good actor. But 'greatest of all time'? I doubt it.

He's made a lot of entertaining action flicks and it's rare he's ever the weak link but he needs do a lot more stuff like Magnolia and Vanilla Sky to be considered one the greatest actors.
One of the greatest movie stars? Hell yeah. Greatest actors... he just didn't/hasn't pushed himself hard enough the last 20 years to get those kinds of plaudits IMO.
He still has time to change that but if he's going to do it he's got to stop focusing so heavily on franchise films. Perhaps Digger will be the start of that phase of his career. I hope so b/c I like his work.

Acting ability is not as subjective as you stated. A person's favorite movie or performance is subjective, though. The 3 actors that you mentioned are fantastic actors. Cruise rarely takes rolls that require him to display a full range of emotions, and do it convincingly. He's certainly not a bad actor and better than average, but not great.

Hollywood tried to cancel him because he refused to bow to woke DEI agendas but he fought back and has the support of red blooded Americans.

Im dying to see what this board’s expectations then reviews of Digger are. I’ve caught no intel on the movie other than I feel like I’ve seen it teased for a year now. I’ve watched the trailer a few times and I just can’t get a handle on what kind of movie to expect

Ok, well then consider this- out of the three actors I mentioned earlier- that we can both agree are wildly talented.. I will ask you one question.. Could you conceivably buy Olivier or Day-Lewis as Maverick in Top Gun ?? No, of course not.. which goes to prove my point, which is, 'great acting' isnt about "Wow, that guy is doing some awesome acting in this film !!".. it's about BELIEVABILITY .. Cruise has incredible believability in most of his roles.. just like Meryl Streep or Marlon Brando.. but they are all great in their own lane, and in their own way, depending on the role they are cast in .

Im only looking forward to seeing Digger for one reason, which is to finally see Cruise do some acting.. for the last 20 years or so, I feel like he's become a caricature, a glorified stuntman.. to me, that schtick has gotten boring as hell.. dont get me wrong, he's great at stunts- but I long to see the ability he displayed in films like Born on the Fourth, and Magnolia- both of which I think he was robbed of an academy award for .

Respectfully, both Olivier and DDL could play Maverick, but Cruise is so indelibly etched in our mind as Maverick, it is hard to imagine anyone else. Remember Olivier in Marathon Man? Pure evil. The movie that I think Cruise was perfect for was Risky Business. He did a great job in that.

Have you ever seen Born on the Fourth of July or Magnolia ? Im a big fan of Cruise's films in general.. I think, especially early in his career- he and his agents/handlers made awesome choices in material to work on, and costars/directors to work with.. So I love a lot of his 80s & 90s movies and I am biased.. but, respectfully- if you haven't seen Born on the 4th or Magnolia , or if it's been 25 yrs or something since you've seen them - then you aren't really prepared to discuss Cruise's acting range or abilities .

I have seen all of Cruise's movies, except for the last few Mission Impossible movies. I am prepared to discuss anything.
