He's the lead in a couple of my favorite movies of all time but he plays the same dude in all of his movies that I have seen. A young, arrogant douchebag that wins in the end.

Most consistent may be a better adjective to use than greatest.

He is a bankable actor with international appeal that can put butts in seats across the world. THAT’s what matters.
He also possesses a generational charisma that many consider the “it” factor. You can want to punch him in the face and want to hug him at the same time. I’ve worked with 2 actors and 1 preacher who have this. It’s a gift.
None of that means great actor. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was a great actor.

No...but also now with a HORRIBLE recent face-lift. He doesn't even look like himself in the new movie trailer. I dont know why these stars feel the need to destroy their faces and why they dont learn from the Madonnas of the world.

Here's one of his greatest roles in my opinion:
That one really set him over the top for me because I never imagined he could be that damn funny.

Actor? No.
Movie star? Absolutely yes.

Depends on what your definition of "One of the greatest actors" of all time is.
Impressive list of films yes.
Longevity absolutely, few have stayed at the top this long or maybe ever. A few have stayed at the top, but even fewer have cranked out hits consistently. Most actors even the biggest ones hit a wall and the hits disappear. I think this maybe his is most impressive feat.
Now if we are talking about pure acting skills, I would call him mediocre at best.

Yes. Credit where credit is due. He’s been too successful for too long to be left out of the discussion. Simple as that.
He’s one of the few actors working today who can lend instant credibility to a project.

quote:Cruise should have been nominated and won for Rain Man. Kevin Kline won that year for best supporting actor; Cruise was much more deserving.
it's why I admire Cruise's performance in Rain Man more than Hoffman's.. Hoffman got the award and the acclaim, but the range Cruise showed going from the selfish dude in the beginning, to the caring brother at the end, was to me next -level acting .
Cruise is one of the last true movie stars, and is probably overlooked as an actor because he's been so successful at the box office, and because he's basically an outsider in Hollywood. I think he is underrated as an actor. He's shown good range and been consistent, and he's avoided the trap of a lot of 'great' actors (DeNiro, Pacino, Tommy Lee Jones, etc) by not devolving into a caricature of playing a 'Tom Cruise' character over and over again as his career has progressed.

Great actor but a very screwed up person. Scientology is a cult.

True, and overlooked early on b/c his characters were always perceived as just the 'cocky young guy'.. but to me that's only because people are lazy and couldn't be bothered to scratch the surface even a little bit .
Jerry Maguire, Few Good Men and Rain Man are in my personal all-time Top Ten.. ONE actor is in 30% of my favorite films ever.. so say what you want about Cruise, but his tastes in material has been impeccable .
