wtf is a "real profit"?

you are, quite literally, talking out of your arse no offense

real profit as in money that is not owed to anyone else that you can use for future investments.

Very few movies are big budget behemoths that are afford the dirty accounting tricks.

You need to make double b/c you have to get back your production costs and pay for everything else needed to get your movie out there.

I'm sorry but you have to make back significantly more than you put in for it to be worthwhile.

I am not denying that big companies play bullshite games to screw actors, writers, etc.

But if a $40 million movie takes in $60 million, odds are by the time everyone gets their cut it was a loser. Theaters alone get 40-60% of whatever they make at the box office depending on how everything was negotiated.

Hollywood has their ways around that, but that also contributes to the big problems brought up.

Specifically, the split between the studio and the theater starts out in favor of the studio in the first week and starts inching its way back into the theater's favor every week the movie plays thereafter.

As a result, movie studios now front-load a movie to play on 3-4 screens at as many movie theaters as possible in the opening weekend hoping for a huge score at the start rather than hope for word-of-mouth to build for the picture.

This is why the week-to-week tallies for films are almost always a 25-35% reduction, at best, for a film each week it has been out, with notable exceptions being films like The Sixth Sense which actually increased their totals for a few weeks after it opened.

That front-loading contributes to the advertising costs and the production costs, as they have to advertise the living shite out of the film and make far more prints than they'd need if they were doing an extended run.

It also helps knock out smaller pictures from the theater which may be doing OK but certainly won't do as big of business as a 3rd or 4th screen of Avengers.

Same ole story:

Large profits must be made, damn everything else. Oh, and people are dumb so it will continue to be acceptable.

BS accounting to screw actors/writers/dodge taxes aside, why shouldn't they be interested in large profits?

He also said that Lincoln came "this close" to being an HBO movie instead of a theatrical release.

This is just sad. Although, it would have been cool if they did Lincoln in the style they did John Adams.

When is the last time you saw a movie run for more than two months or even three at the theater?

Here is an idea film makers. Make something original. Quit remaking old classics and super hero movies and create a new idea once in awhile. I know, I know, easier said than done, but the film industry is failing because nobody is going to theaters to watch the same old tired remakes and all action no substance movies.

Superhero movies have brought action movies into a new era. The action hero is a near extinct breed. The superhero is the king of the action movie jungle

they need to STOP making so many movies. they are oversaturating and ruining the industry. audiences aren't surprised or enthusiastic anymore. why does every movie have to be a action packed blockbuster ?

Bunch of good movies you've listed there. Your movie knowledge shall never be questioned again.
