you were skeptical, perhaps rightly so.
but goddamn it he/she/it owned the role and you enjoyed the performance
I realize this may be a short thread

Without Remorse
Being an Irish Catholic was integral to the John Clark character. Worked partly because they already had a good storyline they didn't radically change, and partly because the race swap wasn't in the name of wokeism. The actor just really liked the character and wanted to do the movie.

Fox in Wanted
Jolie was ok but Berry would’ve been better for what the character functioned as.

Starbuck got tons of hate at the time, but it was great casting and Ronald D Moore made one of the best reboots ever, especially for sci-fi.

Denzel is Denzel.
I also think the (and this is important) UNSPOKEN dynamic of the grizzled old black guy and the happy little white girls adds to the story without changing it.

Not the same, but the switch from XXL to snack-size Reacher in the movies worked, at least for me.

I'm so/so on the movie, but Jeffrey Wright was good as Gordon. I thought Judi Dench was a great M. Combining Wright and Bond, I liked him as Felix Leiter.
Generally I don't care if a character is race/gender swapped if it's not important to the character and doesn't feel like pandering.

Fox in Wanted
It wasn’t even a race swap since they didn’t even use the source material, IMO.
That movie sucked hard.

Red in Shawshank will always be the final answer to this question.

I didn't realize he was white in the book.
Morgan Freeman's character is iconic.
Another one: Denzel as the reporter in The Pelican Brief was great. The book specifically says he's white.

Donner was casting two white actors. The casting director pointed out that race wasn't mentioned in the script, and that Glover would be perfect.

This isn't hard.
Ronald D. Moore wasn't trying to check a quota or anything.
He had, at least, a full idea of what the character should be in his reboot. It did not ring false.
