Possibly not a fair comparison, because her predecessors weren't featured as prominently as she was.

Donner was casting two white actors. The casting director pointed out that race wasn't mentioned in the script, and that Glover would be perfect.

That turned out to be a great decision. One of the GOAT buddy cop movies. They did a fantastic job with character development - we know Riggs and Murtaugh very well for someone we saw for less than 8 hours.

One theme I'm noticing is these changes work most often with the movie adaptation of a book.

And I just remembered another example: Bubba was white in the Forrest Gump book.

This one doesn't really count but the dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude deserves to be mentioned:

Billy D Williams as Harvey Dent in Batman(1989). Many major cities were majority black by the 80’s, and had started having a good deal of black politicians, police chiefs, da’s etc. It would have seemed stranger if there weren’t some minority representation in local government.

Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin in the Daredevil movie was a great call. He's huge. He's physically imposing. He's calculated. And he looks like he could run New York on his own. MCD checked every box. Had no issue with his casting, at all. Movie wasn't good, but it wasn't his fault.

D'Onofrio has made it his character, but he's had far better source material with which to work.

Not the same, but the switch from XXL to snack-size Reacher in the movies worked, at least for me.

Agree. Because Cruise.

That kinda turned everything upside down, and somehow didn’t get cancelled. It’s actually a great moment where things could still be funny and not snowflaky.

Its crazy to think about how if this movie was coming out in 6 months, many posters here wouldn't even have given Morgan Freeman's Red a chance. Woulda bitched about how it "couldnt possibly be a faithful adaptation" of Red if the actor was black.

But back in the 90s, people waited to see how the character came across on screen before they started bitching about casting choices.

I was against swapping Starbuck initially, but damn, Katie won me over. She should have been picked as Captain Marvel. She's got personality.

Others...

Nick Fury - Samuel L. Jackson.

Heimdall - Idris Elba

Perry White - Lawrence Fishburn

Eartha Kitt - Catwoman - it works.

Clancy's John Clark.

Liev Schreiber was by far the best and closest version we'll likely get.

Clark was a former college swimmer, and Navy Seal. Midwestern as they came.
