The delivery wasn’t for everyone

But the amount of respect he has/had among his peers is telling.

I always enjoyed his SNL Weekend Update, but even then I think I knew his style was a "love it or hate it" kind of thing. As good as he was there, his standup was WAY better.

He was also an amazing guest for late night.

Conan O'Brien:

I am absolutely devastated about Norm Macdonald. Norm had the most unique comedic voice I have ever encountered and he was so relentlessly and uncompromisingly funny. I will never laugh that hard again. I'm so sad for all of us today.

Rewatched the moth joke.

I swear, that to be one of the best "Where the frick is he going with this?" jokes ever, if not the best ever.

For some reason I went on a huge Norm kick the last two months or so, watched damn near every video of him on youtube. Him trolling Adam Eget cracks me the frick up every time.

"This guy says your face looks like a cvnt!"

He was always my favorite SNL member as a kid, and I loved Dirty Work and Screwed growing up. He only got funnier with age. An absolute legend. Big loss.

I liked Norm's shortlived sitcom where he was a social worker. My favorite line was when he was rescuing a dog from someone.

"You can't take my dog!?"
"We're social workers. We can take away your CHILD."

I read Norm was originally up for The Late Show host but they actually chose Seth Meyers instead. Wow, talk about bad choices.

"bad choice" doesn't even do that decision justice

I don’t think there was any way in hell he was ever going to host a major production. If so, it would have been for a few months at most. He would have randomly not shown up on set and would always be a ticking time bomb which is what made him so brilliant. He was one of the last comedians remaining that you couldn’t put in a box.

And the Late Late Show as well. All the comedians wanted Norm to do it, but the executives all despised Norm since Norm despised authority. Norm put the joke over his career, and that’s what makes him one of the greatest comedians of all time.

Norm and Patrice O'Neal are two guys who easily could have been 10 or more times wealthier. But they absolutely refused to kiss up to network and other bosses. You can think of them as essentially the opposite of Jay Leno (career wise).

I just love Jon begging him to end the joke while laughing hysterically knowing he’s going to get killed in the press for laughing at something objectively hilarious.

Norm's later work would've attracted an audience of comedians, comedy purists, and his cult following. Those shows want hosts who can placate a broad audience not a subsection.

We were lucky to get him in his podcast like settings, where he could do what he wanted instead of trying to serve the general public at large.

Yesterday I said RIP was not right for Norm’s passing, but I’ve found out what Norm said when comedians he enjoyed passed on: Make God Laugh. So Norm, I now say that to you: Make God Laugh.

I’ve been trying to spread the Good Word of Norm the past two days, and no one in their mid-20s or lower know who he is. I’d put him at #3 behind Pryor and Carlin as the greatest stand up of all time, but to be fair I showed one of these idiots a Carlin clip tonight, and she didn’t know who he was either.
