I’ve been trying to spread the Good Word of Norm the past two days, and no one in their mid-20s or lower know who he is. I’d put him at #3 behind Pryor and Carlin as the greatest stand up of all time, but to be fair I showed one of these idiots a Carlin clip tonight, and she didn’t know who he was either

Younger people don't know older comedians.

Try explaining Kinnison. Yeah, he was a former preacher with a terrible combover, he usually wore a bandanna with a trench coat. And he would scream at the audience.

This is why young people think older people are insane.

But were you familiar with Lenny Bruce? You'd know their other contemporaries from movies and TV after their stand-up (Bob Newhart, Woody Allen, Redd Foxx...).

Is the Norm sitcom from the late 90's to around 2001 or so available to stream anywhere? I haven't seen it since it's original run.

I became familiar with Lenny Bruce thanks to finding out a young Carlin got arrested with him and that’s how I started watching Lenny Bruce, so no, I didn’t know who Lenny Bruce was until my 20s.

Norm: "Some gold-plated chains would make a nice retirement gift for a very, very good slave"

Super Dave: Are you serious?!

Norm: "Well this joke was written years ago..."

Another solid quote by Norm hinting at his inevitable death:

quote:

When I die I want my body to be donated to science, but more specifically a scientist who's working on bringing dead guys back to life.

I don't know who would be considered Norm's best friend in comedy (outside of his business/creative partners and producers that are mostly out of the public eye), but it seemed like Spade and Saget were really close with him. Norm was also a real loner, though.

I think he was really, really good friends with Billy Joe Shaver, someone who would not run in the other Hollywood circles.

The most interesting Norm ever was to me was when he dropped his whole act and he was clearly just being himself. The best examples of this was his interview with Robert Duval and his talks about religion and faith. In those instances, you got to see the true intellect and philosophical genius of Norm.

Them and Artie. What a fricking upset that Norm died before Artie.

Artie said just the other day after his death that he hadn't talked to Norm in years.

It's a shame, because Artie and Nomr had probably the best modern comedic chemistry of any duo. They fed off each other perfectly. Norm's old Stern appearances in the prime Artie era were phenomenal.

Honestly, this is probably why Norm and Artie haven’t been close recently: Artie is a hardcore addict on pretty much everything and Norm was a hardcore gambling addict. Norm gambled away a large portion of his wealth. While Norm wasn’t an alcoholic, Norm was not a good person to be around Artie. I think both acknowledged it was probably healthy for Artie to not really be around Norm for that sake.

While this doesn’t remotely surprise me, apparently after Don Ohlmeyer fired Norm, he told all his hosts that Norm was banned from the network. Instead Conan stood up to Don and told him that you demanded that I put on the best show I can, and I can’t do that without my best guest, so Norm is going to stick around. Don gave the letter back to Conan with just a annotation “I expected better from you.” No, Conan was loyal and made a damn good show and Norm sticking around was fantastic. Jay Leno on the other hand was a whore who’d do as asked.

YouTube

I do find it hilarious that the biggest thing in Don’s career is his firing of Norm. Good for Conan standing up to Don, which probably led to still the greatest SNL episode of all time when Norm hosted.

He said a few years ago that Billy Joe was his closest friend. I could tell he was pretty upset last year when he died. He wasn’t all that close to Artie in the past decade.

I didn’t listen to the whole podcast, but Andy has become insufferably Woke these days. Doesn’t surprise me.
