if you go back and watch the Star Wars OT it's pretty mid. Especially the first one
The first SW film was inducted into the Library of Congress for a reason. It has masterful storytelling and manages to draw people in without revealing too much. And it’s explained in a way that’s easy to understand which makes it more enjoyable.
How can you dog on the OT like that? Star Wars was a cultural revolution for American cinema when it released in the late 70s. It changed cinema forever by introducing a new innovative way for how to create world-building with practical effects.

Go back and watch Mark Hamill's acting in the first one objectively.
You have to measure it against it's time
Because every fantasy/space opera since has had Star Wars to study, and be inspired by
The acting in the 10 Commandments and White Heat are pretty mid by today's standards. James Caan overracted like a mofo in Brian's Song and Godfather.
But they are still among the greatest films of all time

Harry Potter nor Star Wars won best picture. Lord Of The Rings was the only fantasy to ever win much less sweep the oscars for fantasy.

He gave a serviceable performance in the original trilogy. But his voice acting performance of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and the Arkham games is incredible.

Academy Awards focus heavily on individual performances in movies when determining things like Best Picture.
I’ll admit that Star Wars was never known for strong individual acting performances, not even the original trilogy. But that was always the point: it’s a modern mythology story based on grand-scale musical scores and elegant world building. Most of the characters are either generic good guys or generic bad guys, but that’s the way it was always meant to be. It’s not meant to be a character study. So yeah, I can get behind why the OT never won any Academy Awards.

It’s almost like watching Band of Brothers and then being upset that there’s years more of the overall story and “universe.”
Of course it’s not simple and is vastly more enjoyable when you know preceding/correlating information and how it all related to what you’re watching on screen.

Right, you don’t need the books to enjoy it or understand what’s happening. If it sticks with you and you’re interested in knowing more that’s a bonus and there’s plenty of material you can lose yourself In. I’ve asked him to explain his opinion, he’s given me zero so I have no idea what he’s on about.

You've probably outgrown movies like that. Let the kids love their movies.

Fellowship is boring as all hell, and nothing happens
Wtf?
The flight from the ringwraiths, weathertop, the ford at the Isen, the balrog of moria and Boromirs redemption is nothing?
Fellowship is the best of the trilogy.

He then goes on to say he thinks Star Wars and Harry Potter are better series.
Let me say I enjoy all of them but LOTR is by far my favorite

Fellowship is always my favorite each rewatch. It was Viggos favorite as well due to the actors having dialogue driven scenes together. The other movies were done on green screens quite a bit.

It’s a high fantasy story that requires you to have read all of the books to even have the slightest understanding of what’s going in on. If you have never even touched the books, it’s super hard to follow.
But I thought the movies laid things out quite well. Hell, there's a lot of exposition, as they set thr stage for what should happen.

LOTR is the best trilogy in movie history. The Nolan Batmans are the only then even close.

Never read the books and I think it's the GOAT by a mile

Only the single greatest scene of all time.

It’s a modern epic and probably the last time CGI looked really good in a major movie.

Don't forget another Andy Serkis vehicle: the Planet of the Apes trilogy

Fellowship was my favorite for a long time but Two Towers has moved up a lot for me. The battle scene at Helms Deep is so well done from a schematic and strategy standpoint I didn’t appreciate it as much at first but on rewatches it’s battle storytelling at its finest.
