It’s entirely possible for a show or movie to be dogshit while also not wanting it to be review bombed

I think what gets ignored a lot of times is that review bombing goes both ways. It's not always negative.

True but the former is more prevalent it’s like when you look at Yelp you’re more likely to find a negative review because people on the internet like to bitch over praise

you have absolutely no way of knowing that, but you're stating it as fact. you dont think the woke hordes out there were just itching to jump on and give the little mermaid 10/10 just because frick the racist conservatives?

To a degree, I agree with what you're saying. But these sky screaming window licking liberals have quite the agenda.

it’s crazy a guy who will have 700 page arguments about a show he never watched will also criticize Rotten tomatoes for trying to screen out reviews of people who didn’t go see the movie.

These sites are basically cutting their own throats.

As they change ratings they *may* get a few more people to see a movie because it was rated higher than it should. However, people then watch it and if think it’s a shitty movie, they quickly loose trust in the rating system, quit using it, and the website loses traffic.

idk you have to do something for actual quality control.

trying to actually verify someone saw the movie is a good idea, but it squares the results toward people who buy tickets online. which is probably a huge chunk of people, but people who walk up to a counter are cut out, but also people who don’t see the movie.

If there was a legitimate way to do this, I would have no problem with it. The issue is that there isn't, so they are applying subjectivity to their rating weight.

RT just checks your email against the email used to purchase tickets, which does weight people who buy their tickets online more than others, but RT is also owned by Fandango, who sells tickets online. so it is exactly their audience.

But that's not all they are trying to "screen out," and that is clear. They could avoid controversy with simply having verified reviews and unverified reviews. Some people may buy at box office. Some may have passes, etc. Some may have seen it on a cruise ship. Who knows? Why can't they share their opinion if they want?

It is amazing how obsessed grown men are with freaking movie reviews. Especially for a kids movie

If you wanna see it, see it. If not, don’t. Why spend time comparing reviews and making points on a message boards?

Honestly, I wish you were right, but unfortunately the game has changed and it's so much easier to manufacture all sorts of cultural agendas from thin air that ignoring this kind of stuff will just let it persist.

That's really the issue, and why there's backlash.

And while this ONE incident, by itself, isn't important, it's embedded in a whole mess of things, whether coordinated or not, that do have a meaningful impact on people.

Because that's the whole purpose of message boards?

I work for a consumer products company, and we are mandated by retailers to participate in Bazaarvoice and the similar Amazon Vine program. You are essentially buying reviews. The belief is that a new product isn't trustworthy until it hits 10 reviews. To get 10 reviews, you need to send out about 12 products. I have to budget 6 figures for sample programs for this.

Now scale that up to a movie production value. You can still see movies in many places for $10, most places $15 still works. Imagine you had a million bucks to seed reviews. Hmm. If only there were platforms out there to do that...

Free tickets, just write a review. Do that, and you'll get more free tickets later. BEST MOVIE EVER!!!

Reviews are such horsecrap now.
