You're right, smug isn't the right word, but oscar was probably the most intelligent & educated person in the office. He was a know it all, but I never got the feeling that he felt he was better than anyone.

Exhibit A: China S7E10

His nickname is "Actually."

Not until later seasons. At one point Jan tells Michael his branch is 4th in sales out of the 5 she is responsible for. He was also going to be a severance package employee when Scranton was going to be merged into Stamford.

I watched "Performance Review" episode this morning. This exchange always makes me laugh.

Dwight: Jan, have you ever had deer?
Jan: No.
Dwight: It's a delicacy. And, you know what? It's an aphrodisiac. So when we're done here, you guys could go over to the Antler Lodge, sample some deer, and talk about my raise.
Michael: What do you say, Jan?
Jan: Okay, here's what I'm gonna do.

It is that inital excitment Michael gets on his face when Jan says "Okay" at first. Hahah

one of my major gripes about the show as it went onward. Kevin went from lovable buffoon to a probably retarded incompetent. It's like they said "we're gonna make him as dumb as humanly possible until people complain and we can't get away with it anymore" but no one complained. I HATE the later seasons but have attempted to watch a few that come on comedy central when I get home from work, there was one from S8 or 9 where he literally didn't know the alphabet. Went from like F to Q to J to B. I mean I get that dumb people can be funny but that's almost insulting to me. And it would even be passable if he was a janitor or something but no, this man is an accountant that deals with numbers for a living. GTFO

The Simpson's did the same thing with Homer in the late 90's and that's when I quit watching that show.

I think they had to show his supposed incompetence for laughs. He had proved for many years that he was a great salesman and had worked his way up.

We have put a lot of thought into a show about a fictional paper company located in northeast Pennsylvania.

Also, oscar, Darrell, and even Toby are pretty normal, but don't act like smug fricks.

A huge part of Oscar's character was that he acted smarter than everyone and had to constantly show off the fact that he was smarter.

- One episode he refused to use a calculator because he "only trusted one machine" (points to his head)

- There was an entire episode around the rest of the office calling Oscar "Actually" because he would always interrupt people and correct them. When Michael got into a debate with him about China and won, the entire office gave him shite because they were so happy he got knocked down a peg. And when Michael agrees to have coffee and discuss China further with him, Andy and Jim help him prep for the debate because they couldn't stand the idea of Oscar being smug and winning again.

Another one I saw last night. At the company picnic, they walked in talking about "We're gonna show our faces to a few people to be seen, and then we're gonna leave."

Jim did the same thing with the party at Robert California's house. He even bragged about being masterful at leaving parties early.

dafuq is wrong with ghosting a party?

I watch this show all the time. The more I watch it the more I realize that:

1. Jim is a huge dick.
2. Andy really is some ineffectual, privileged, effete, soft-penis'd, debutante.

I do think Jim and Pam were pretty smug at times but that overall they were pretty good people who cared about the others, especially Dwight.

To me it was Karen who was a major bitch and was always smug as frick. She treated Jim like a five year old and other than Pam and Jim, I'm not sure anyone liked her.

I've probably said this too many times in other threads, but Jim gets too much shite on this board. For all his issues, he was also the only person who had enough balls to step up and save someone from humiliation.

they just struggled to make jim and pam interesting once they were together

Jim should have told her to get fricked when she nearly blamed him for her parent's divorce.

Really?

Every time I watch those episodes, all I can think about is how perfect she is for Michael. She is just as socially weird and "funny" as he is.

I would agree with this.

Dwight was just so "Dwight" almost all of the time, so Jim and Pam had been conditioned to treat him a certain way. Whenever Dwight would appear more normal though, like when he had his concussion or when he was going through the breakup with Angela, they reacted by treating him well.

Angela has to be in here somewhere. I don't care how tight her arse is or how many Tight arse Dundies she got. She is just an awful person. She plays the part great and she's supposed to come off dry and emotionless, but that doesn't make me like her character any more.

Rewatching the series now, and I'm in season 8, Andy is unbearable after he gets his manager job back from Nellie.

I honestly don't get the Jim and Pam hate as a whole. Like a lot of people have said, they are the most normal couple on the show. They each have their moments but I don't get how some people can't stand their characters.

The show is really rewatchable because each time you watch it you pick up on small things here and there that make you laugh that you missed previously.

I don't hate Nellie as much after she is demoted from manager. Andy sucks so much at that time in the show I kind of overlook Nellie.
