Some of my favorite moments on the show were when he "showed up" and showed signs of how good at his job he really was.
Definitely. Another good example is when he finally manned up to Stanley and reminded him who the boss was.

If we're doing Michael Scott Competency Greatest Hits, I'll add:
- keeping the office entertained with the murder mystery
- crafting a well conceived commercial
- always celebrating his personnel when asked about his numbers at corporate
- commiserating with Jim about the failed monthly birthday party and admitting that he had learned lots of little things that kept the office moving smoothly
- warning Holly not to take Meredith's exchange of sex for supply discounts (and Outback Steakhouse gift cards) to corporate
- the Golden Ticket sweepstakes
- seeing Kevin's potential as an accountant when he applied for the warehouse, re: the fan theory that one of the reasons Scranton was profitable was because of "Keleven"

Ever since this started airing on CC, I've been watching it a lot. The smugness of Jim/Pam once they're married (and general disregard for the rest of the office) is really standing out to me, especially Pam.
Jim, a paper salesman in Scranton and Pam, a receptionist with great tits... so much better than everyone else.

Not enough love for this post so far

Um, that was technically Dwight's idea.

So they aren't better than the two old fat lazy salesman, the idiot beat farmer, the singing gay moron, a mentally retarded accountant, a cat loving cheating whore, an ugly whore, a 20 something year old indian who acts like a 14 year old, the temp, and creed?
Jim and Pam's normal life as a married couple with kids did not relate in any which way or form to anyone else in the office. They were the the social norm. everyone else was "weird" in some way.

Another one I saw last night. At the company picnic, they walked in talking about "We're gonna show our faces to a few people to be seen, and then we're gonna leave."
Jim did the same thing with the party at Robert California's house. He even bragged about being masterful at leaving parties early.

a mentally retarded accountant,
one of my major gripes about the show as it went onward. Kevin went from lovable buffoon to a probably retarded incompetent. It's like they said "we're gonna make him as dumb as humanly possible until people complain and we can't get away with it anymore" but no one complained. I HATE the later seasons but have attempted to watch a few that come on comedy central when I get home from work, there was one from S8 or 9 where he literally didn't know the alphabet. Went from like F to Q to J to B. I mean I get that dumb people can be funny but that's almost insulting to me. And it would even be passable if he was a janitor or something but no, this man is an accountant that deals with numbers for a living. GTFO

i only said he was retarded b/c the scene where Holly yells at Angela to not talk to him like that, and then Kevin says "wait, you think i'm retarded", is one of my favorite scenes, as well as everything leading up to that.
"I am so gonna bang Holly"
"I am so gonna bang Holly"

Also, oscar, Darrell, and even Toby are pretty normal, but don't act like smug fricks.

Yeah, Phyllis was pretty normal as well.

I agree with a lot of that. Most people became caricatures of themselves at some point. Kevin and Creed are perfect examples.
The only thing I will say, though, is that Holly thinking Kevin was retarded when she first started is one of the most hilarious things ever on the show.

I get your point, but to say Toby and Oscar aren't smug tells me you either don't know what smug means or have never seen the show.

You're right, smug isn't the right word, but oscar was probably the most intelligent & educated person in the office. He was a know it all, but I never got the feeling that he felt he was better than anyone. Toby was just kind of a middle aged hipster, but like oscar, I never got the impression he thought he was better than others in the office.
Jim and Pam thought they were gods gift to Scranton. also, a lot of this started before Jim was even a manager and Pam was still a receptionist (not that Jim being a mid level manager would justify their superiority complex).

Notice i didn't mention them.
And I'm not sure you know what smug means if you think Oscar isn't.
Darrell and the fat comedian should have been fired several times for how they acted towards their boss thinking they were better than him. you'd swear Darrel was the boss, not Michael.

It makes them have what most people see as normal life, which no one else in the office had.
Phyllis thinks that Bob Vance is the big shite. She's never left Scranton. She's a small town woman who's never seen anything outside of her home town. Jim and Pam have both lived somewhere else for some time, and don't think the Steam town mall is the only place in the world you go to buy something nice. She's like someone from Larose who's thinks going to the Southland Mall is a big deal. Meredith thinks Outback is a nice steak restaurant.

Well Toby was the Scranton strangler after all

They were pretty safe considering what Michael would do when he went down to the warehouse. It was pretty much a "you fire me, I'll get your fired" type of thing.
Also, I'm going to jump on the married Jim and Pam being awful bandwagon. I actually had to check the dates of these posts because I know I've railed on them before. The example that always sticks out to me is when Pam was pregnant. They went around telling people what they couldn't eat around her because it made her sick. No, Pam. It's not their job to accommodate you. Take yourself out of the situation. They also acted pretty shitty to everyone in the office about their wedding even though they decided to invite them all to the wedding and rehearsal dinner.
