Yes he his, especially this episode.

I am loving the character and he is doing a great job. It took me a minute to realize that he had no lines in the ep. To, in my opinion, dominate the episode the way he did with so little screen time and no dialogue? Amazing work.

I am enjoying the show far more than I would have thought. I am nervous about the cast changes, but we shall see.

good episode but i don't understand why the crab guy gave them such a hard time for 3 years. they had facking dragons with them the whole time
quote:

Anytime the dragons made an appearance, they retreated into the caves where the dragons couldn’t get to them. They basically were just sitting still and waiting out until Daemon and his army got tired and wanted to quit. Almost worked too

A great analogy to this is the US in the Vietnam War. We had B-52s, Phantoms, napalm, all that stuff. Yet the Vietcong (in particular) via the use of caves, cold blooded terror tactics, and guerilla warfare were able to hold their own and outlast the US forces for almost 10 years (1964-1973).

As an aside for future reference, and not to be a poohead nerd but just share knowledge, it is a white hart, not "heart". Hart is a old term for deer or stag. In fact that's where the place name Hartford comes from-- a shallow spot on a river or stream where deer (or harts) would cross (or ford).

A few nerd sites of questionable credibility are claiming that Elizabeth Olsen & Henry Cavill are in negotiations for roles in future seasons of HotD (the sites are so shitty that I won't link). The Olsen story seems to have some legs, as the "Emergency Awesome" youtube guy did a video on Olsen possibly playing a younger version of Melisandre (he has a so-so track record on these things).

Regarding Cavill, I suspect this is just false buzz being conflated with the seemingly more-credible reports that he's close to a MCU deal. However, if Cavill were to join HotD, there's a particular Northern lord who plays a not-insignificant role in the Dance of the Dragons for which Cavill could be near-perfect.

I would be shocked if they landed either for anything more than maybe a flashback scene with them as previous Targaryens or something of that really limited nature.

Was the white stag a tip of the cap to the Baratheons? Has that house even been mentioned?

Yes.
One of the members of the Council might be a Baratheon.

I don't blame the king for hesitating to kill the stag. It was a beautiful animal. He would've been fine killing it on a real hunt, not this sham crap of tying it up while the sycophants cheer on the kill. He knew how phony it all was and saw through it.

Do you think Melisandre will make an appearance somewhere during the run of this show? From what we know from GoT, Melisandre should be alive during this time.

Is there a Sword of the Morning?

Ser Arthur Dayne, was the last recorded, but not the first.

It reminded me of a Cecil the Lion situation.

Great episode.

Don't the King and his daughter both understand that her taking the throne when he has a son is a recipe for certain bloodshed in the realm?

He hesitated because it wasn’t the stag of the prophecy he foresaw, which was also what helped reassure him that Rhaenyra was the right choice…He’s also slowly succumbing to an affliction.

That was what a royal hunting party was meant to look like. Martin himself said that the one in GoT failed to come close to capture what they really are like and this one righted that wrong

quote:

The scene that annoyed him the most was just “fixed” by his Thrones‘ prequel House of the Dragon. In the first season of GoT, King Robert embarks on an ill-fated hunt through the woods along with a few others and is gored by a boar.

Where we really fell down in terms of budget was my least favorite scene in the entire show, in all eight seasons: King Robert goes hunting,” Martin explained in the book Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon. “Four guys walking on foot through the woods carrying spears and Robert is giving Renly shite. In the book, Robert goes off hunting, we get word he was gored by a boar, and they bring him back and he dies. So I never [wrote a hunting scene]. But I knew what a royal hunting party was like. There would have been a hundred guys. There would have been pavilions. There would have been huntsmen. There would have been dogs. There would have been horns blowing — that’s how a king goes hunting! He wouldn’t have just been walking through the woods with three of his friends holding spears hoping to meet a boar.”

While it was definitely what a party should look like, I could see where someone like Viserys would also struggle with killing an animal in such a way. He was once a dragonrider who fought in battle before Balerion passed. He knows what it's like to actually "battle" and setting up a deer like that is pretty awful (even if historically accurate).

To have to kill a deer, that wasn't even the deer that was hyped up to him, had to be disheartening. At that point you're just killing this deer for shits and giggles. And even if Viserys has his derp moments, he seems at the very least like a decent person.

He's definitely conflicted, but even in the times he stands firm with his convictions, he invariably backslides into being a beta male. It seems Viserys is beholden to tradition each time it runs counter to what he clearly knows to be the right things.

Didn’t Viserys just jump on an old tired Balerion once when he was a kid, fly around Kings Landing a few times, land, and then never ride a dragon again?

Don't know that if it needs it's own thread, but I saw that a Jon Snow/GOT sequel is in pre-production. Just passing along info for GOT fans.

I don't believe that Viserys ever fought in battle as his grandfather ruled over a very peaceful and prosperous reign.

I think in some ways he sees himself in the deer.He seems to be slowly wasting away and can probably feel death closing in on him just like the deer trapped there while they both are surrounded by all the lords and retainers. He wants to do right by his daughter but as he told her earlier even he does not exist above duty and tradition and the pressure is getting to him.

Seeing him drown his sorrows with alcohol reminds me of later stage Robert Baratheon. Another guy who had good intentions but wasn't fit to be king.
