You make good points. Maybe I'm hard on Beauty and the Beast...because people went ape-shite over it at the time...because it was like...Disney is back!
You may be older than me, because Beauty and the Beast I’m pretty confident was my first movie to ever see in the theater, but this is my contention with The Little Mermaid. Fantastic songs, animation, and villain, but I think the rest of it was just bad.

They were dark and told the truth about life. From Bambi to Mary Poppins to Fox and the Hound to everything up until the 90's when things changed then we got The Last Jedi.
I mean, it’s not as dark as Pinocchio or Alice in Wonderland or Dumbo, but I’d say it’s in the darker side of the Disney canon. As big of an oaf as Gaston is, he turns into one of Disney’s darkest and most determined villains. I do think that is skilled writing when you can take a character from that extreme to the other and make it feel organic.

But I think you are onto something. Disney did seem to change after Beauty and Beast - for better or for worse.
I do think that’s what modern day Disney animators try to emulate over any other film in their filmography, and as you say, for better or for worse.

But I grew up with...The Black Hole...a terribly dark Disney movie. Night Crossing another depressing Disney movie.
I grew up where Disney movies weren't song and dance fluff pieces.
Disney used to be totally different than today. It's hard to explain and Snow White is no fairytale. I think if you took the the movies that made Disney they maybe couldn't be made today.
Plus I'm just sucker for the hand drawn Disney. There's something about it. It just looks better IMO instead of generic.
We all knew it would come down to Lion King vs. somebody but I just wished it was some old school Disney film...They are really better if you analyze them and the work.

This is a super tough choice. As much as I love Lion King I'm going to have to go with Beauty and the Beast.
I know its a dumb thing to ding it for b/c he is so clearly a villain but it's always kind of bothered me that Scar gets blamed for all the food disappearing when it's pretty obvious they are in a drought that he has no control over.
This isn't very fair either but to be honest I kind of prefer the Broadway play over the movie as well.

Beauty was the changing of the guard where Disney basically sold out from their heritage and went full commercial. Maybe that's why people love it.
To me, that is what happened with Lion King. Success of celeb voice in Aladdin was their new model and they went all out with those for Lion King. That is where they sold out.

It just has songs people loved at the time but haven't aged all that well.
You're insane.

I disagree with you here. Gaston was horrible from the beginning of the movie. He was always trying to get Belle to marry him, and I believe he even says at one point that he'll get her no matter what. That is why, when the opportunity strikes and Maurice is being taken off to the asylum, Gaston hits her with the "I can save him....IF you marry me." That is the darkest thing about the movie to me.
He's a douche from beginning to end. And as far as him wanting to kill the beast, all they've heard all movie long is about how bad this thing is. But nobody believed it. Once Belle showed them that he was indeed real, Gaston wanted to rid his people from this terror of a thing. It's not really farfetched to believe, from his perspective, that this wasn't the right move. Now sure, he has no interest in listening to Belle when she is saying that he isn't foul at all and is actually a kind creature...but he has never really been interested in what she had to say about anything; he just wants her to be with him.
And I know it gets played out sometimes, but the whole Stockholm angle of the movie just doesn't sit too well with me. And it's one thing that I think doesn't really hold up well with the movie. And to clarify, I do think overall the movie holds up pretty well and is definitely one of Disney's classic films. But that part has never sat well with me.
This movie was actually on TV last night and I caught the second half of it or so. And it just doesn't hold up as well with me as I wish it did. And while I can completely admit that I am a Lion King homer, and it is my #1 favorite animated movie ever, I do think it's fair to call it the better movie.
And you're insane if you think the songs in LK can't hold up to BatB. They are what and what, and I'd argue that LK has more great songs than BatB.

Gaston from the start is clearly an a-hole, but you’re laughing at him the first half of the movie. You’re not the second half.

I’ll admit Hakuna Matata annoys me, and I don’t think “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” is a classic. The others are great though.

but I don’t think you could tell that story verbatim these days without everyone realizing Ariel is a dumb slut that jeopardizes the world
A slut? Really? Good lord dude.
quote:
, while Ariel is the type of girl every father wouldn’t want.
Well her dad was a pretty horrible father himself. I doubt many dads watch the movie and think about how they never want a daughter like Ariel bc of her actions. Or even think about it all given that she's a mermaid.

Paige O'Hara being cast as the voice of Belle is second to only Robin Williams as Genie. There was a push for Jodie Benson to voice the character but, thankfully, that did not happen.
Animators added in Belle tucking her behind her ear because it was something Paige had a habit of doing. Also, Paige is a pretty good artist and you can purchase Beauty and the Beast artwork by her online.

I mean, she sold her soul to Satan for a hunk of man meat she has never met, likely dooming everyone. Eric could be Gaston for all she knows. Dad gives you a concert all about how great you are? Sorry daddy, that’s not good enough. It’s all about me getting everything I want and frick everyone else. Ariel would be the chick in high school you would not allow your daughter to hang out with. I stand by that statement.

Here’s the big difference between Triton and Ariel: Triton changes and learns what he did was wrong. Ariel is rewarded for her idiotic and reckless behavior. She learns nothing except she can get away with anything because she’s hot. She is an abhorrent role model for young girls. She is the anti-Belle.

quote:He is narcissism personified. He's the most beautiful so he thinks he has to have the most beautiful. His motivation for killing the beast is two-fold. First, he HAS to kill a powerful "animal" to prove he can. And he's jealous that Belle shows him affection, something he never got.
He was always trying to get Belle to marry him, and I believe he even says at one point that he'll get her no matter what. quote:This is so overblown because when he's her captor, she hates him. It's not until he treats her as a guest and give her freedom that she finds feelings for him. And he doesn't have an obsession with her. It wasn't his idea to replace Maurice with her. But I get the comparison in a general sense. However, it's not really about a prisoner falling in love with her captor.
Stockholm angle of the movie
quote:They can't. Beauty and the Beast, Tale as old as Time, Gaston, Belle, Be Our Guest... not a single bad one in the bunch and I'll put any one of them up against everything in LK.
