The story isn't about her love for him. It's about his love for her.

I would say its kind of even both ways. Both of them had to make some drastic changes in their mindset.

As far as the message of The Lion King, I dont hold it against Simba for running/running from his problems. At the age he was and what he was potentially up against, there werent many options for him. And Timon and Pumbaa didnt face his fears obviously, but they were a good influence on him and that was exactly what he needed at the time, a friend and some comfort.

I thought I was %100 sure what my choice was going to be but this is harder than I thought. Debating this want me to do an all-time great villain tournament
These both bring the heat in that category.

I'm sorry, who made this statement? He wasn't running from "his problems"... he was running from certain death had he stayed. Now, it could be argued that as soon as he was full grown, he should have returned, but how? With what plan? It wasn't until Nala found him and she could pass the message onto the other lionesses that they could take down the hyenas and Scar. He would have lost otherwise.

Agreed. If you love both movies, I think it makes an even tuffer decision based on how many really good/interesting characters there are in each film. Its pretty evenly split. Somehow Lion King makes you laugh at Whoopi Goldberg, thats hard to do.

Lion King. Not even close. I remember reading in a film class in college that it film gurus considered it Disney Co.'s greatest masterpiece of all time. Even before reading that, it was always my fav.

I’m willing to bet more film gurus would say Beauty and the Beast was Disney’s greatest masterpiece, in addition to Snow White, Pinocchio, and Sleeping Beauty being higher than the Lion King. BatB was nominated for Best Picture, which no animated film had done at the time, and that was also when it was limited to 5 films.

The Prince of Tides was nominated for best picture that year. Thats about as bland of a movie as there is. If they were nominating movies that typically werent nominated, they should have thrown in Terminator 2. But that is a pretty awesome accomplishment for B&tB.

I think there's a difference. Beauty praised for songs...same with Lion King but Beauty really was a song and dance number...people love that. Plus it apes Phantom which everyone has loved for 40 fricking years.

I don't think there's anything special about the story or animation in Beauty. It just has songs people loved at the time but haven't aged all that well.

Yeah definitely the old ones, they were hand drawn and took forever to make.

They were like paintings. Look at the end scene of Fox and the Hound. (and yes, I'm beating that to death) because it was a little more emotional than Lion King and had classic animation.

Beauty was the changing of the guard where Disney basically sold out from their heritage and went full commercial. Maybe that's why people love it.

I really think BatB turned Disney on its head. Sure The Little Mermaid happened and started the Disney Renaissance, but I don’t think you could tell that story verbatim these days without everyone realizing Ariel is a dumb slut that jeopardizes the world. The Little Mermaid really took everything that worked for old Disney and nearly perfected it save for the protagonist, which they got shite for at the time.

But in Beauty and the Beast, Belle is treated like a real intelligent person and is given courage not to be looking for another man but a greater purpose. Belle is the type of girl every father would want, while Ariel is the type of girl every father wouldn’t want. Gaston is probably the first Disney villain that you actually know in real life (save for the hunter in Bambi (Crackpot: who may actually be Gaston) and Lady Tremaine), which makes him all the more effective when he transforms into a monster as the film progresses.

And this was undersold until recently, but it’s a perfectly paced movie. There are few movies as perfectly paced as this, and it is the remake’s biggest failure. If you change one thing in it, then the pacing is off and you don’t buy it anymore. It’s a movie you can’t change anything about. I really think it’s a perfect movie.

And name the song that hasn’t aged well in Beauty and the Beast. Listen to “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and tell me with a straight face that it’s better than a single Beauty and the Beast song.

You make good points. Maybe I'm hard on Beauty and the Beast...because people went ape-shite over it at the time...because it was like...Disney is back!

I think that's why it also got nominations. In hindsight, I just don't think it's all that special.

People mistake Disney...they were never about fun and happy...despite Disneyland being the happiest place on Earth.

They were dark and told the truth about life. From Bambi to Mary Poppins to Fox and the Hound to everything up until the 90's when things changed then we got The Last Jedi.

I should go watch it again but I'm just going off of memory and I wasn't overwhelmed. Lion King I felt had emotional gravitas like Fox. But I think you are onto something. Disney did seem to change after Beauty and Beast - for better or for worse.
