Wights must be raised. Period.
Remember Hardhome?

They burn the bodies so that the white walkers can't raise them later on when they eventually come. You must've missed the "come at me bro" moment in the Hardhome episode. That is why when Jon killed the white walker, the wights all fell apart.

Anyone else think it was weird that Sam wasnt paying attention and could give two shits when Gilly was finding out about Jons parents' wedding, and then when Bran mentioned it he spouts up and starts rattling off the details. WTF??
That line only becomes relevant to him at this time when he realizes Jon was the child of the Rhaegar and Lyana.

I highly doubt the 'no drinking while you're pregnant' rules applied back then . . . especially when the 'no fricking your brother' rule didn't apply to Cersi. It is a big stretch to argue this point as confirmation she is pregnant.
Well she didn't, and shortly after she didn't and she clutched her stomach Tyrion asked her if she was pregnant.
And it's not like GOT is known for historical accuracy being that it's entirely fictional.

Hardhome episode spells this out precisely. They must be raised (and now apperently "die" when their master is slain). Wildling lore notwithstanding.
At the time I didn't think it was total confirmation that they have to be risen by a Walker, just that he accelerated the usual process.

WHich raises an interesting question..... If you kill the NK do all the "others" and the "wights" die as he is the one at the top of the "family tree"?
That's the implication I've interpreted. I think if you kill the Night King, not only do the wights go down but also the Walkers themselves.

But them simply dying beyond the wall won't turn them into a wight. One of the white walkers has to raise them, right?

Jaime is the KINGSLAYER.
The leader of the dead is the Night's KING.
Foreshadowing?

other than this likely being terrible writing just to serve forced plot points, that example still doesn't prove anything
NK could be raising them in force just to show Jon what he's facing. that does not imply the dead ONLY are raised with force

The killing of that Walker in Beyond the Wall I think is far more conclusive evidence than what happened at Hardhome.

yeah well the writers have obviously given up any sort of logic by this season so i don't think we can use anything as a definitive rule anymore

To be fair, while I've always thought this to be the implication as well, the Wildlings could have rightful fear that a Walker will eventually stumble upon the body and revive it.
Yeah. I remember a few of us hashing that out on here a couple of episodes ago.
Of course now that he is south of the wall, the main question that remains is his range. I'm assuming it is fairly limited because if not, why have White Walkers creating wights. He could just do them all himself. But even so, now that he's south of the wall, he should have a significant amount of dead bodies to work with.

this show has devolved into fanboy fiction and plot devices like this. it's so frustrating

So bad.
It was kind of shocking how bad they botched that entire scene/reveal.

I thought it was good in parts but disappointing in others. The whole Bran and Sam scene was kind of cringe worthy to me. It just seemed so odd.
horrible. they really mailed that in.

But yeah, it is no longer reaching the heights that this series reached when it was really clicking. I think D&D are just not as good at actually creating narratives as Martin was at his best. Their talent seems to be at adaptation rather than original material. Of course they are apparently writing original material constrained by what I'm guessing are guidelines of the high points of how the story plays out.
How involved is Martin in the writing of the current season?
Has he been looking it over?
Did he just give D&D the keys?

I'm guessing D&D were pulling out their hair after the Season 6 finale that a large portion of the viewers still had no idea what the Tower of Joy meant, so they really downed it to the lowest common denominator.

I am curious about the first walker that tried to kill Mormont. He wasn't turned until he crossed the wall, correct? Or am I forgetting something?
Posted on 8/28/17 at 11:03 am to NawlinsTiger9
The wight I believe was faking it. He was already a wight when he was dragged across the Wall. Wights seem to be like Vampires where you can invite them in, but they can't go in on their own accord. I think Viserion broke the magic of the Wall though which allowed them to go South. Notice the Night King never went directly over the Wall until it was destroyed.

Yeah, that makes more sense than anything else
Of course the dragon named after Dany's a-hole brother is the one destroying the wall
