#2? What's #1 then?

The very first Planet Earth. I was absolutely blown away by it, and had just gotten into HDTVs and shite. It blew my mind and was quite the experience for me.

Only episode that I do not enjoy is #3 Carentan. Albert Blithe was poorly portrayed. He went on to serve with distinction in other conflicts. The episode ends saying that he died from his wounds. This is a reflection of Amrbose's laziness as a researcher. He stole other people's work and never bothered to confirm info.

I can't think of a better limited series.

I don't think I've finished the final episode without crying. And I've seen it a bunch.

What a treat to be able watch it for the first time.

Pretty sure it wouldn't get made the same way today, given the gender and race of most of the heroes.

I think this was pretty well covered in the series. Nixon makes this very point in the first episode when he tells Winters that Sobel is a genius.

Being able to effectively prepare men for combat doesn’t mean you won’t get men killed during combat.

It’s the difference between a great drill sergeant and a great platoon sergeant.

It’s clear Sobel was not a competent combat officer. His subordinates were mutinous at the thought of following him into battle for good reason.

Actually it is a great episode despite the Blithe portrayal. The initial assault on Carentan. Easy holding the line and the Shermans showing up. Welsh and Lutz maybe in open field with a bazooka trying to take out a tank.

I agree Blithe was poorly portrayed; seems to be a miscast as the actor didn't make him likeable or enough to really care about him.

I started it yesterday as well after meaning too for 15 years. My first impression is that I can see why they hated Sobel but he definitely seemed like an effective trainer.

Carentan

Still great, it just tend to go use the bathroom or get a drink while Blithe is on screen. It works out, because by episode 3 a deposit and refill are needed. My wife and I will binge this show at least twice a year, almost always in one sitting.

Yeah, with Masters of the Air having started I'm going to start Band of Brothers and The Pacific as well.

I love BOB! My dad was a paratrooper in WWII. He was in the 508 and BOB is 506. He refused to talk about any of his WWII experiences with me. BOB gave me a good idea of what he may have gone through, especially the training.

You should try having an awful memory. It's great for TV re-watches. If I wait a few years I don't remember half of the stuff that happened.

Nixon mentions this when he talks about how he had a headmaster who was like Sobel (Chicken shite).

A lot of guys in Easy Company have said given Sobel his props after the fact saying his harsh training prepared them for the shite they went through and the never quit attitude of E Company.

Nixon: Sobel's a genius. I had a headmaster just like him in prep school; I know the type.

Winters: Lew, Michelangelo's a genius; Beethoven's a genius.

Nixon: You know a man in this company who wouldn't double-time Currahee with a full pack, just to piss in that man's morning coffee?

Agreed. They do not give out bronze and silver stars to people who are too afraid to fight.

quote:

Blithe also served in Korea with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team where he was awarded a Bronze Star and a Silver Star for jumping behind enemy lines surrounded by a Chinese battalion.[9] He was later assigned to the Military Assistance Advisory Group in Taiwan. He never retired from military service.[citation needed]

quote:

Blithe was portrayed in the popular HBO series Band of Brothers. In the end screen of episode 3 "Carentan", Blithe is said to be "never recovered from the wounds he received in Normandy." and would claim that he later died in 1948. This was a false death claim as none of the other veterans from Easy Company found out what happened to him, and believed he died in 1948 from his wound. Stephen Ambrose, who collected the veteran's memories, regarded this as factual information, and wrote that in his book "Band of Brothers, E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne: From Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest (1992)". The Blithe family later refuted this which led to corrections in the subsequent editions of that same book.[10] The movie, resultant DVDs or Blu-Ray discs would not have such changes, and would still present the false death claim.

Great mini-series and better than the Pacific.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

It’s the best miniseries I’ve ever watched. And as good as the story and actors were, the best part of the entire show was the interviews with the real guys.

It still gives me goosebumps listening to them.

It’s fine, not as good as it’s made out to be. Midway through, all the episodes become the same thing. Just guys screaming medic! for 45 minutes straight. There’s barely a story at all, it’s mostly a series of action sequences. Not that there’s anything wrong with that if all you’re looking for is action, not much past that though.

We all have our own opinions, but I must have watched a different version than you did.

I won't post spoilers, other than to say the last couple episodes aren't about battles.

It’s the best piece of film ever made. It’s truly timeless.

I think it’s so much better because it was made in the early 2000’s. You can tell how much of the show was truly filmed and not unrealistic CGI - where I think Masters of the Air is hurt (still loving the show.) This new 4K Ultra HD mixed with lots of CGI can just make things look so fake.

The budget of Band of Brothers was unheard of at the time. Also the actors really play almost all the roles perfectly. It’s hard to think of anyone that was mis-cast. Damien Lewis was perfect, among alot of others

Lt Ronald Speirs.

Had an uncle in the 101st during WWII that was a great human being but until his death had his demons (alcoholism). Poor soul died from the terrible complications of alzhiemers.

One of my everylasting memories was a comment he made while I was visiting with him in the nursing home...while in the commons area of the NH, he looked around at all the other folks in the NH and with the dull stare of dementia he said "this sure is a nice barracks, damn shame all these boys want be coming home". Still chills me to my bones.

And yes, Speirs was one bad arse dude. Hopefully he went out peacefully, but with all he had been through, seen and done, I doubt it.
