Been a gaping hole of mine for an embarrassingly long time.

It's crazy how many names are in this series

I’m jealous as I would like to experience it for the first time again.

Enjoy it, you’ll only grow to appreciate it.

Episode #1 and 2 are perfect entertainment. My favorite part of the story. Currahee!

When you finish that you should watch “ We Stand Alone Together: The Men of Easy Company”

It’s a documentary based on the guys you are watching with interviews, extremely good.

If you are only exposed to the story from the TV show, I wanted to provide a little perspective on Captain Sobel (played by David Schwimmer). He was portrayed as a real a-hole (he was) and incompetent in the field. But what the show doesn't cover is that in retrospect he was credited by numerous people of molding better soldiers with his harsh methods. One of his former soldiers said Sobel didn't ask them to do anything he wouldn't do. I noticed on the show that when Sobel made the guys do extra runs up Currahee, Sobel was right there with them. Respect!
quote:

Wiki: Despite Sobel being almost universally disliked by the men under his command, many of them have nevertheless credited him with Easy Company's cohesion, some if for no other reason than Sobel united the men against a common enemy. Richard Winters wrote that Easy Company's teamwork and discipline "began with Captain Herbert Sobel at Camp Toccoa," and Sergeant Rod Strohl said that "Herbert Sobel made E Company." When referring to large number of former Easy Company officers who eventually served at the 506th's regimental and battalion levels, Ambrose wrote that Sobel "must have been doing something right back in the summer of '42 at Toccoa."

What blows me away about the BoB story is that there are so many incredible dramatic details. Ambrose must have been absolutely thrilled hearing these stories. Sobel as the first focal point is just the start, with his harsh methods and pettiness, his trying to get Winters court-martialed, the mutiny!

No other WWII show can hope to match Band of Brothers because the whole story of Easy Company is just too amazing.

I very much agree with your points about Sobel, however

I think this was pretty well covered in the series. Nixon makes this very point in the first episode when he tells Winters that Sobel is a genius.
