When ‘Silence of the Lambs’ won they jumped the shark. I still to this day think ‘Silence of the Lambs’ was a comedy. Hilarious!

Then when they gave it to ‘Shakespeare In Love’ over ‘Saving Private Ryan’ I knew they were done. So I haven’t watched nor gave a shite since 1998.

Can’t believe it is still hyped like it is. A total joke.

All of those award shows are garbage now. Even my wife won't watch them anymore. And most of the content put out by Hollywood these days is garbage too. Get off my lawn.

This year's slate of best picture noms is actually pretty good outside of Don't Look Up which totally doesn't belong there.

The shape of water was stupid, trivial, and boring. I don't watch. It's a show for people that watch the view.

Interest has been steadily declining for the last 15 years or so. We have reliable ratings data on the Oscars going back to March 1986. Here are the ratings (in the millions) for those ceremonies:

1986: 37.8
1987: 37.19
1988: 42.2
1989: 42.68
1990: 40.24
1991: 42.7
1992: 44.44
1993: 45.7
1994: 46.26
1995: 48.28
1996: 44.81
1997: 40.08
1998: 57.25 ("Titanic Effect")
1999: 45.51

So the Oscars had very solid viewership throughout the 1990s. Never once did it slip below an average of 40 million viewers and it even peaked at over 57 million viewers in 1998 when Titanic won Best Picture.

2000: 46.52
2001: 42.9
2002: 41.82
2003: 33.04 ("Iraqi War Effect")
2004: 43.56
2005: 42.14
2006: 38.94
2007: 39.92
2008: 31.7
2009: 36.94

You really started to see a decline starting in 2006. The rapid decline in 2003 was artificial due to a lot of people tuning out thanks to many big-time Hollywood celebs who had come out against the Iraq War.

2010: 41.62
2011: 37.9
2012: 39.46
2013: 40.38
2014: 43.74
2015: 37.26
2016: 34.42
2017: 33.0
2018: 26.5
2019: 29.56
2020: 23.64
2021: 10.4

The decade started out fairly strong but then took an absolute nose dive in 2018 from where it truly hasn't recovered. I don't really know why this is. There are obviously multiple factors at play here but I don't think we will ever see the hey-day of the 90s ever again.

I really dislike The Shape of Water, but you're suggesting The Shape of water was meant for and primarily watched by bored, middle-aged housewives. That's a stupid suggestion.

here we go ... sounds like the same crowd we will hear from this weekend. The anti sports contingent with their "sportsball" comments.

It's just as annoying ... just because you don't care equates to nothing. The industry is not just a bunch of overpaid actors and producers just as much as the NFL isn't just overpaid QB's and coaches. Lots of people behind the scenes that make the industry as a whole a lifeblood for hundreds of thousands of people and their families (carpenters, teamsters included who certainly aren't automatically liberals or uber rich).

And Hollywood isn't the only industry that celebrates their top talent ... All Star games, Rock n Roll HOF inductions, etc etc.

take the nonsense to the OT .. this a board about the love of film and that's what the ceremony is essentially about since the 30's. As a member of the Academy .. i sincerely don't care if you watch or not.
