A24 revealed its provocative action drama Civil War at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival on Thursday night.

Screening to a packed audience at Austin’s Paramount Theater, Civil War was revealed to be a tribute to war journalism that veers away from the politics that led to the central conflict. The movie simply questions what the practicalities and horrors of a civil war would look like in modern-day America.

When asked about when he wrote the film, Garland said, “It was four years ago. I wrote it back then and sent it to A24 and they just said, ‘Yup, all good,” which was surprising. This is a brave film to finance, so it was super appreciated.” Garland has long been in business with A24, dating back to his directorial debut, Ex Machina. The action film is reportedly the indie studio’s biggest swing to date.

Civil War doesn’t offer much explanation about how the country gets to its perilous state, which the director said was intentional. Said Garland, “The film is intended to be a conversation. It is not asserting things. You want to leave space for people to bring themselves to the conversation. It’s important that it was a two way street.”

#CivilWar is phenomenal. Alex Garland’s latest is a wholly consuming war movie. An epic but deeply intimate piece that uses the experience and motivations of a group of military-embedded journalists to highlight the deeply chilling reality of living in a world that never learns.

The production value is through the roof. Between Rob Hardy’s highly immersive cinematography and the booming sound design, Civil War puts the viewer as firmly in the shoes of a war photographer as possible.

Alex Garland’s “CIVIL WAR” is an absolute fricking MASTERPIECE. A riveting, unflinching, visceral cautionary tale that’s scary as hell. Watching it, one can’t help but feel how close we are to this actually happening, making it a MUST SEE to stop it before it actually does. #SXSW

Um… Alex Garland’s Civil War is incredible. A true knockout. The movies I want to compare it to will force an overhype situation, so I’ll just leave it at that. One of the most engrossing movies I’ve seen in years. Goddamn.

@ErikDavis

Alex Garland’s #CivilWar is unlike anything I’ve ever watched. It’s a big, viscous, action-packed war picture from A24, which means it brings with it a richness & depth you don’t get anywhere else. Garland’s best work - flawless cinematography & gripping from start to finish.

I swear when I tell you I was on the edge of my seat for the last quarter of this film. Insanely tense stuff. A cautionary tale? Sure. Lots to discuss & debate, but the film doesn’t have an agenda except to remind us that when it all falls apart, the journalists will be there to tell the story. #CivilWar

I’m speechless, Alex Garland’s Civil War is not only the best movie of the year but the most important. A haunting story that’s beautifully shot and led by a tremendous cast. There is nothing quite like it and you’re not ready. A true modern masterpiece!

@JasonKauz

Alex Garland’s CIVIL WAR is a masterpiece. My heart was constantly racing and my jaw was on the floor by the final act. Get rid of any expectations you have and see it in the loudest theater possible. #SXSW

@JamesPPoole

Not only is CIVIL WAR Alex Garland’s best film, it’s his APOCALYPSE NOW.

A staggering journey into the dark heart of a decaying nation that examines the role of journalism, desensitization to violence, and division. Genuinely speechless.

Review coming to @DiscussingFilm

Civil War is something special. Alex Garland firing on all cylinders with a beautifully character driven story that refuses to pull back from the harrowing & senseless realities of war. This film left me shaking. Incredible performances. Thrilling & devastating. I loved it #sxsw

I really enjoyed Ex Machina and Annilation, so I'm excited. Hopefully they're not overhyping it

Usually that’s not a good sign since the majority of the time the audience thinks opposite of critics, but every blue moon they align. I guess we’ll see.

It can’t be worse than Men. But Garland has far more hits than misses, especially when you consider the limited series Devs and the films he was writer but not directing (28 Days Later, Sunshine).

My only concern is, as a Brit, he will use this to sow discord in our already divided nation so the British can finally win the American Revolution. They need a win after whatever they did with Kate.

I still don’t know if I want to see it. I’m just exhausted by politics and even if the movie isn’t political, people are going to react like it is political. Like I was dreading seeing reviews

A horrific tale. A journalism tale. An American tale, well-told

Hmmm? We still have that? Journalist movies are always about one point of view.

I'll wait to hear from the MTV board about how much I should like or hate it politically before I waste my money.

And Devs, etc.

Is Sonoya Mizuno in this?

If so, I'm all in.

If this country goes into a CW, I hope most journalists are the first to get buried. They'll have helped lead it.

“Critics are raving”

this propaganda is news worthy?

Anytime it’s said that “critics are raving” about a movie, especially one with political views, you should take it with a huge grain of salt. Odds are it’s preachy crap that lectures the peasants about life. Toss journalists into it, the lecherous parasites that they are, and I don’t expect this to be any different.

Trailer looks pretty good. A lot better than the trailer for "The Crow" I saw earlier.

Wait the central characters, and probably heroes, are journalists??

I'm immediately suspicious of anything that attempts to make modern journalists look good.

He means lecture. That's always what 'conversation' means.

The trailers pretty much spell it out.

I am racking my brain trying to figure out why a legit actor like Jesse Plemmons would sign on to this garbage

I mean this really is not true, many times they are in lockstep.

There are obviously polarizing films, however.

I could see this being one like that. Audiences expecting some balls to the wall war/action film and it being much more nuanced than that.

Critics liking the "thought provoking nature" while audiences not giving a shite

Hopefully not the case and the reviews are correct.
