are they? or are they just vehicles to tell a story and get different perspectives for the war?

I'm just going by the description. Obviously, I haven't seen the movie, but it's clearly a topic with political overtones. And I know some of you like to pretend that hollywood hasn't been preaching one-sided politics in almost everything they make the last decade and I know some of you like to pretend that hollywood writers are completely neutral in their view of politics, but that's not reality.

I hope you're right and this movie can tell a thoughtful story without the need to one-sidedly preach at its audience like so many of its predecessors have. I'll wait for audience feedback first over "movie critics".

I'm not pretending that at all. I just don't think Garland is that type of director that is going to make such a simple movie.

I could be wrong. And that would suck. But forgive me for having some optimism when it comes to Garland.

+1 I've seen other critics already tweeting that the trailers are very misleading

Which is what could be polarizing about this. Not the politics, but the general public going in expecting some brainless action film, and its not that.

Look, I hope it’s less political too. With that being said, I’m not going to hold my breath. After The Last Jedi I will never trust another critics review again, I’ll tell you that.

just a setting/backdrop

This is the feeling I got from early screenings. The war isn’t really the focal point in the sense of the why it happened just that it is happening and the journalists in the movie are showing how it affects people living in society

I think back to the original Red Dawn, and recall a scene where Powers Boothe is talking to the kids about “what started it.” His response was something along the lines of “the two biggest kids on the block just eventually get into it”.

I haven’t seen any trailers for the movie yet, but I’m guessing they could probably take a similar approach, albeit updated for modern communication advances,
depending on who the central characters are.

Telltale sign that the movie will be garbage

The same critics that raved about True Detective: Night Country. Let’s face it, at this point film criticism merely serves as a bat-signal to the left on what’s acceptable to see.

Are they the same critics that raved about [insert objectively great film that both people and critics loved]

You are probably right. This person pretty much let the cat out of the bag:

If this many film critics are raving about it, there is no way it doesn’t get into the politics. Probably just politics the critics agree with.

Alex Garland’s #CivilWar is a disappointing mess and terrible remake. Not only did it miss out the entirety of Cap and Iron Man’s plot but it also featured ZERO Marvel references outside of Kirsten Dunst. The MCU is truly dead. Kathleen Kennedy should be fired.

Don’t think anyone is wish casting anything.

But when a movie claims not to be political, yet critics (who are overwhelmingly on one side of the political spectrum) love it, it’s not crazy to think that it really is a political lecture.

Maybe it’s not, but in todays Hollywood climate, that would be a pleasant surprise

bullshite I know there are some here praying it is so they can bitch about it and have their dumb arse complaints justified. Even after the reviews everything seems to point to this being apolitical it’s your own paranoia that makes you think it’s some grand liberal propaganda machine

I’m going to watch it hoping I learn something to do for when it does happen.

Having said that, I have watched a lot of interviews from psychologists, etc and said this country would never fight each other in a civil war. Instead, the citizens would all team up and fight the government instead

It would never happen. It's just nonsense from internet tough guys. Americans aren't going to take up arms and start mowing down their fellow Americans. It's laughable.

You are the other side of the coin that seems to make you so angry. You literally have people telling you they are suspicious of a one sided story because it has happened so often, but they hope to be proven wrong. It’s your own paranoia that makes you think the way you do.
