It was basically Star Wars. It could be seen as a standalone film, but nothing was really resolved. There was plenty of room for a sequel showing what Neo would do after becoming "The One" and how the conflict between the humans/machines would "end."

I wouldn't say never intended to spawn a sequel. That's John Wick.

The first one ended with a great ending. Hell, it's implied what will happen next. He's going to wake up the humans and then the machines are going to have decide what happens next - go back to war and lose their resource, or figure out something else. Perhaps a lot of humans will voluntarily do it while others start trying to work with the machines to fix the surface. No one knows.

The second movie immediately shits on the first one's ending. Any sequel would be hard pressed to fix that.

I liked the second one.
I don't understand the hate it gets on this board.

I wouldn't equate the Matrix with Star Wars. Much of what made it so great were the insane fights and weird shite. Once you establish it's all just VR, the dramatic impact is nil. Wow, Neo flies- well no shite, he just got a cheat code.

Everything that occurs in the VR setting, once you know what's up, is boring. Like watching someone else play a video game. You know Neo can overcome, because he's aware it's not real- and so is the viewer.

So, then we turn our attention to the "real world", and frankly that part sucked.

was the premise and the world building of the first sufficient that they could have made a quality francise of it if they had put the time and talent into the sequels?
Yes.

Once they had Neo stop the sentinels in the real, they either had to go Matrix within a Matrix or full tard. They chose full tard.

I think they could have if they didn’t try to tell a humans win story. The story has only one logical conclusion, AI control. Humans have no hope of surviving in that world.

The whole Agent Smith becoming some unstoppable force was a really dumb story arch to add to it. He should have just stayed destroyed.

This would have helped. The human/machine dynamic was better without superpowered Smith.

They tried to get too complex, IMO. 3 movies of straightforward human/machine conflict for supremacy would have been fine. That's what drew people in to begin with.

I don't think the humans had to lose. It would have been more compelling if the humans had to try to use Neo's power in the Matrix to defeat the machines. The humans were destined to lose in the real world, but a plot line where they draw the machines into the Matrix to use Neo to defeat them there could have worked.

i dont think so, yes the structure was based on a never ending loop that continuously repeats itself generation after generation, but where do you go that wasnt covered already?

You didnt find out there was a continuous loop in the first film. All we knew was there was a war between man and machine, a virtual world was used to control the human population and there was a prophecy regarding a savior (resurrection story ala Christ).

The whole purpose of the 1st movie was to establish the prophecy as true for the audience. Thats just the tip of the iceberg as it completely leaves wide open how that prophecy is fulfilled......how does The One "hail the destruction of the Matrix, end the war; bring freedom to our people"?

The sequels were blank pages at that point.

I forgot to mention how bad this ruined those movies.

I absolutely loved the 1st one; saw 3 times in the theater. The 2nd one was so disappointing, I didn't even bother watching the 3rd.

I don't know if the sequels could have wound up any better than they turned out.

Mostly because it increasingly looks like the Wachowskis caught lightning in a bottle with the Matrix and haven't been able to duplicate that success. The second Matrix movie did make a ton of money but since then their results financially have steadily gone downhill. The critics haven't been kind either.

They had one good movie in them it looks like.

They had one great idea and it happened before they were established and had much creative control.

When they got creative control, things turned into bloated, incoherent messes. It's sort of like Lucas and the prequels, it's good to have some check on an idea man.

I also think the 2nd and 3rd Matrix could have benefitted a lot from aggressive editing. A lot of those movies are jumps between philosophical soliloquy and action. If they chopped the dialogue and kept it action focused, they would have been much more entertaining.

Truer words were never spoken. You see it in every artistic endeavor.

No matter how skilled the creator they are going to make mistakes and not catch them. The book that should toss out the meaningless subplot and trim about 100 pages. The movie that should have been edited with a hacksaw to trim it down to something watchable (the first cut of Young Frankenstein was a "disaster" in the words of Mel Brooks and it took some serious editing to make it the all time classic it is now). You need a hatchet man to catch these things.
