Just watched the (I think) second, and starting the third. Pretty bad.

So, the question is: was the premise and the world building of the first sufficient that they could have made a quality francise of it if they had put the time and talent into the sequels?

i dont think so, yes the structure was based on a never ending loop that continuously repeats itself generation after generation, but where do you go that wasnt covered already?

the 3 or 4 they did was neatly tied into each other the best they could do in my opinion even though i think the final one was really sub par compared to the others. i think that was mainly due to them seeing as well that there was nowhere else to go that wasnt covered already except kill off the main characters in a way that fit with the story

Did you watch the Animatrix? I think there were stories to be told within that universe that could be interesting. There are more movies currently in development BTW

The first movie was never intended to spawn a universe or have any sequels.

it was just so wildly successful from a financial standpoint they we're going to churn out more matrix content regardless.

pretty much the vast majority of sequels suck for that reason. They have absolutely no artistic reason to exist and are thrown together crap just trying to cash in on the popularity of the original

The second had some cool fight scenes, and the meeting with the Architect was essential to the series, but otherwise not great. The Zion party and obligatory sex scene with Neo and Trinity was a waste of time, what with all their plug-ins showing.

However, I really enjoyed the third one.

I found that starting with the second one (I think Reloaded was the 2nd one?), the fight scenes just went on too long and were not as well done as the first.

I think don’t know sure maybe

The issue is that no one cares THAT much about the weird underground sci fi stuff outside the matrix.

So how do you keep the vertical reality worked relevant.

Yeah Neo is the one...

What can the One actually do besides rock out in the matrix.

How does that free humanity?

They are decent.

The problem is they are not as high a caliber as the first one.

The third was maybe the most I’ve ever been pissed off in a movie theater.

I think it’s one of the worst conclusions to a trilogy I’ve ever seen in comparison to the high point.

This (for me) explains so much of the story telling in the 2nd and 3rd movies compared to the 1st.

I would have taken the blue pill and asked for the red dress lady to come with. Zion was a shite hole full of ravers.

Just think what a modern day Matrix would look like. With the modern PC special interest culture, Neo and Trinity would be either an LGBT couple, or Neo would be a female/minority hero that conquers the old white architect.

The sequels just have almost nothing in common with what made the original intriguing. Outside of the meeting with the architect, the sequels are just building up to video game fights/battles that aren't really interesting.

Well...especially since the creators are no longer brothers and are instead “sisters,” that would likely happen.

Though, the movies were that anyway. If you noticed, many of the folks in Zion were minorities, as were many members of the crews. Who would want to “wake up” more, a suburban white person or a struggling minority? (Since the Matrix was sold to us as an approximation of our current world, I make those assumptions.)

On top of that, there is a reason why everyone is running around in latex/BDSM clothing.

Irony: the dudes who made a movie where one of the strong themes is unfortunate reality vs. comfortable delusion have decided they are both stunning and brave ladies.

The first was a blend of action and a cool premise with philosophical points in the background.

The second and third stripped out a lot of plot (the second starts with machines burrowing to Zion and ends with machines burrowing to Zion) and amps up the philosophy so that it's 5 minutes of lecture and then 5 min of action in a loop.

Matrix 2 will always have this, though.

There were serious pacing and content issues with 2 and 3.

2 tried to do about a movie and a half worth of setpieces and the “wham” ending left the next film completely fricked for about the first 45 minutes. And that doesn’t go into all the content which went into the Enter The Matrix game instead of the film.

3 was basically stillborn. It started off dead and never really got any momentum because they blew so much of their load in Reloaded.

I would contend that agent Smith is actually the one.

Plus, there'd be a whole lot a brahs bitching about how they upped the diversity quotient in the 2nd and 3rd movies.
