I The Real Life and Sad Ending of Herbert Sobel

Sobel was a petty tyrant but his results in training men for war were undeniable. As already mentioned, many in the Company credited Sobel with them surviving the war. Starting as teen joining a military academy, he dedicated most of his adult life to the service of this country, going on to also serve in Korea.

I couldn’t decide if he was a psycho or just had supernatural confidence. But one thing for sure he was a stone cold killer. The kind of man who finds his place and purpose taking lives for his country.

Have spent the last few months researching my great grandfathers WW2 history to produce a semi book for my dad for Father’s Day. He refused to talk about his time in the service all we were told is he was shot in France.

I got his discharge form and it opened up a new world to me. He wasn’t shot in France. He was shot north of Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge. Early December he was in the Battle of Hurtingen Forest.

Made a lot of that Bulge episode real life for me. Stuff I never new I discovered 20 years after the man died.

Watching them and what they went thru, then listening to people today talking about 21 years old being kids. They were more of a man at 19/20 than most 35 year olds today.

Dang. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it. I even have the DVD set that my wife gave me years ago.

Great mini series. I put Band of Brothers up there with Lonesome Dove as my 1A and 1B favorite video production in any format (mini-series, movies, television, Youtube videos, etc).

Hurtingen Forest was a real bitch.

This battle really never gets any notice, I know of no movie made about it, which is a real shame.

I agree 100%. Have seen the entire series multiple times, and I never get tired of it.

Truly the greatest generation ever.

Read the book if you can. The resemblance of David Schwimmer to Sobel is incredible. The book does provide a bit more context to their relationships after the war as well

I am reminded how much I disliked Colin Hanks' character.

Also...been waiting a while, it seems, for the Air Force series to come out. Still doesn't appear to have a release date yet. Wikipedia says it had a budget of 250-300 million, so it "should" be pretty epic in terms of scope and scale.

Was traveling back from vacation yesterday. Caught a few of the episodes on last night after we got home on whatever channel it was playing on (AMC I think). Definitely one of those shows I can watch over and over again. Hits me in the feels every damn time.

One of my favorite interviews they did with Winters is when Ambrose was going to release the book and the publishers were concerned about some things. Ambrose went to Winters about them, first bit was the portrayal of Nixon as an alcoholic. Winters said it wouldn't be a problem.

Second was the Spears stories. They were so outlandish and they were scared about legal issues that might come from publishing it all. Winters called Spears and asked him if he did those things. Spears said yes. Winters told him the publishers were hesitant to publish all of it. Spears told Winters he could write them a letter saying it was all true.

Book gets published

The Winters/Speirs comparison will always be fascinating to me

Needed both those types to beat the Germans

The scene where Speirs runs to join up with I company might be my favorite thing in any TV show ever

This. When he's talking about each man's life after the war...emotional.

All of the episodes are phenomenal, but I always love episode 2: Day of Days when they finally jump, scramble to find their rendezvous point and proceed to attack/destroy the German artillery.

The jump is one of the most intense scenes in TV history. Incredible film making. Extremely brave men.
