I’m usually all about moderation and people being centrist. The thing is most everyone in this movie is a nazi, a black radical, or related to/friends/dating a nazi or black radical, it’s unlikely those people would fall in the middle

and the movie did handle the topic with nuance. derek and danny werent neo nazis because they were dumb ignorant fools who were born with hate in their hearts. derek was shaped by his fathers views and murder. danny was subsequently shaped by derek and cameron alexander. their reasons are not superficial, they are fleshed out. and we absolutely do get people not involved in either extreme side in this movie like mr sweeney and their moms boyfriend and dereks prison friend

Well, I’m sure as hell glad they didn’t go with that original ending.
I think it’s better not to show what happens to Derek after his brother’s murder. Maybe he’s haunted by his past decisions and influence on Danny. Maybe he reverts back to his old ways. Leave it ambiguous.

Man that’s a great response and most of these guys will ignore it bc they have no retort, well done

quote:Exactly. It would be like saying that Remember the Titans should have avoided the main conflict as well.
How did the racial stuff hold the film back? Isn’t that like the whole point of the film?
American History X and Remember the Titans are not deliberately white shaming like more current movies can have imo.

I think Mr Sweeney represented the idea that you always have to KEEP THINKING and not turn your mind over to some group. Never give your individual identity over to the group . Also every single person in the movie lost in the end, including the black shooter . We saw the regret and fear in his eyes after he did the deed. And all of us thought now this cycle begins for his family. The single exception to this was Derek’s black friend in prison. He represented grace. He won because he brought somebody to the light.

Kinda like Full Metal Jacket where the 1st half is way better than the second half.

I didn’t see American History X as “white shaming”, more like shaming hardcore skinhead neo nazis. Or just hardcore racism in general. If they wanted to white shame, they would have focused on more “normal” people who do racist things

A layer of dread for sure.
there was a constant sense of impending tragedy.

I like it, although I don't really care for Ethan Suplee's character -- he's too over the top. I also didn't buy the notion that Danny would be afraid of Sweeney's threats.
My favorite scene was the "make-up sex" scene.

Amazing movie and Norton's best performance, but his crying after Danny gets shot is on par with Brad Pitt's "what's in the box" in Seven

Edit: I had a typo. Meant to throw a “not” in there.

It's incredible to me how many people miss the entire point of the movie.

. They had the talent (obviously) to do more nuanced things with it.

What’s the entire point of the movie that was missed ? I mean it’s many points are all pretty obvious, aren’t they ? I mean, any movie that ends with a quote as a summation isn’t too hard to figure out, right?
quote:
"We are not enemies but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained It must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be by the better angels of our nature." ~ Abraham Lincoln.

One of my all time favorite movies and one of the most memorable acting performances.
