Because of the non-stop media adulation of Coach K and his program for thirty years, they acted as if he were a saint, when he was as dirty as anyone. Players’ parents were given jobs to ensure their commitments. There was the Zion situation, and the NCAA blatantly ignored issues involving Corey Maggette and Lance Thomas.

To me, the most glaring example from the media was how they treated K when he decided to fully embrace one and done. When Cal was the king of one and done, he was the scourge of college basketball. When K did it, he was simply “adjusting to the times.”

I remember how the school's administration treated their lacrosse team.

Given the decades long trend in higher ed, there is 95% chance it is worse now. Likely most of the "Duke 88" is still there.

People don’t hate Duke for race. They hate Duke because they’re always loaded with McDonald’s AAs and it’s an elitist institution that had its dick sucked by national media for decades.

Media favorites generally get a lot of hate to go along with the love they receive from the media.

Duke is far from the only basketball program in that category though….

It’s also an elite, small, private university that most ppl can’t get into or afford.
So 99% of Duke fans are bandwagon fans with no affiliation to the university.
I believe most ppl in North Carolina are more fans of nc state and UNC.
Then, of course it’s media love they get when Duke basketball is as dirty as they get but the media covers them as saints.

But OP has proven that can't be the reason in this scenario

Meh. He's proven Duke is more hated than UCONN. I attribute that to brand. UCONN isn't loved, though.

But no matter who wins this tournament, someone somewhere will complain about that team. It'll be Hurley this or that. Michigan fans suck. Arizona and Illinois are all Euro players. People hate the success of others.

The duke hatred is the eliticism they have and act.

It's literally like watching Tulane snobs

This is the biggest reason. I absolutely could not stand when Coach K would talk down to people and tell opposing players how to act after they beat his team.

ESPN’s love affair with all things Duke, plus them getting favorable calls all the time makes them easy to hate.

Pricks like Christian Laettner and Grayson Allen sure didn’t help either.

Go watch "I Hate Christian Laettner" on ESPN. That tells a part of the story.

Coach K was always very media savvy, so his teams always got good coverage. That's another reason.

Some in the media hate them because they have traditionally had white guys and black guys whose "blackness" was in doubt. Jalen Rose has said as much about Grant Hill.

The main reason, however, is they almost never suck. People hate teams that never suck.

Kansas, blue blood of blue bloods, got in NCAA trouble for offering Zion Williamson a couple hundred grand.

But he went to Duke for free?

People hate Duke because they were always cheating but always put up as one of the examples of doing things the right way.

That rat faced frick never got called out for all of his bullshite.

Yeah ending JJ Redick’s career was fun, but now we’re not relevant enough in the sport to really care one way or the other

Duke is the team for people who don’t really have one

People hate Duke because coach K was a sanctimonious prick who was completely shielded by the media. Does no one remember the coach K and Dillon Brooks story. He completely lied and then doubled down only to have to apologize once the audio came out. He’s an all time scum bag.

This is why I dislike Duke so much. They KNEW that the count was lying, but didn’t try to help or protect those guys because they knew the POS media was making it into a race issue. They were fricking cowards.

Once it was proven that she lied, that fricking count should have been vigorously prosecuted and sent to fricking prison.

This is it.

White players are usually the "most hated" players. Whenever someone says that a player has a "punchable face" it's always a white player.

I suppose I understood once, but it’s funny to me how people are celebrating Duke’s exit from the tournament when the team that beat them has won six national championships in the sport in the last 25 years. UConn has more national titles in that span than Duke has total.

Very easy to root for UConn over Duke this year. I am so sick and tired of seeing the Boozer brothers in all of those commercials they play over and over and over again. Glad they are not in the Final 4.

The hate started with Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley, but it was not the total hate we see now. A lot people were thankful they beat the Fab Five. Then Coach K was seen as building a model program, but through time it appears that Duke was not just a good school with a great basketball program, it became a good school with entitled fans, a fawning media backing and covering everything up for them.

Bingo. They are the Yankees, Cowboys, or Lakers equivalent of college basketball. only 15% of their students are actually from North Carolina. it's also a small and elitist institution who had a very hate-able figure leading their program for 40 years to the highest of heights in the game. not hard to bandwagon, and very easy to hate

The key adjective in that sentence is white. They hate Duke because they’re a private school that historically played a bunch of white kids.

That’s it.

Go watch the “I Hate Christian Laettner” 30-for-30. The main reason is that they were historically white.
