I have it on good authority that Tyson saved the free world that night.
There was a terrorist at the arena that night making final plans to by a couple of nuclear warheads from a Russian KGB agent. He was going to blow up an American base in Japan and also Honolulu.
Tyson took the dive to create a diversion for the good guys to come in, neutralize and remove the bad guys without anyone noticing.
Tyson is a gawdamn American Hero.
At least, that's the only way I could rationalize Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson. (I was 16 at the time.)

Without a doubt, the most fun I've ever had watching boxing. I'm not a big boxing fan, but for some reason, we got together at a buddy's apartment and split the cost (PPV) between about 15 of us. We went absolutely nuts when Tyson got knocked down. Most vivid memory I have from boxing.

11 year old me was shocked and awed.

I just remember everyone making excuses for tyson at school the next day. Myself included. The ref counted too fast, Tyson was picking up his mouthpiece, tyson slipped on a wet spot, etc.

It was in Tokyo but the fight was primetime in the US. The fight was on HBO, I watched live with my father and two younger brothers.

Buster became the face of a shitty boxing game for the Sega Genesis.
The end.
The end.

9% express that they knew it would happen because Tyson made some obscure mis-step that they are speculating on or because they would claim Buster Douglas was secretly not a tomato can.
6% would claim it was fixed with varying degrees of specificity, but all with the passion of 9000 fiery suns
5% would focus on Don King, Don King observations, or Don King jokes (as they should)
2% would react to the reaction and say that it wasn't worth the attention
2% would comment on the trunks and the color of the gloves, the decor of the arena or the celebrities in attendance.
1% would decry boxing as violent and savage
If it happened today, 45% of social media reaction from 1% of all users would focus on branding, what it means to Tyson's brand, and what is Douglas' brand. We are all worse off for it.

We call those LSU/Saints fans.

Saw it live. Right from the very beginning, you could tell Tyson was just going through the motions and that Buster Douglas was laser focused.
Tyson spent much of the fight eating jabs and 1-2's while loading up for that 1 knock out punch.
And you have to understand this - Tyson was the baddest dude on the planet. Intimidating. Dominant. Knocked everyone out... like 9 out of 10 inside 2 rounds.
So this was a complete shocker. Like, the biggest upset in the history of sports.
And like another poster said above - watching Tyson eat those last few punches, then the big shot as he's on the way down, then fumbling around drunk as a skunk trying to get his mouthpiece....
Complete shock and amazement. And Buster Douglas was an above average, run of the mill heavyweight.

I was at a friend’s house and we watched rounds 1 & 2 expecting the usual quick KO. I think it was on regular HBO.
When the KO didn’t happen, we went upstairs to play Nintendo. About 30 minutes later, my friend’s little sister yelled up at us that Tyson got knocked out. We didn’t believe her at first.

I vividly remember right where I was on campus when I found out. Crazy.

I remember seeing the round by round updates on ESPN and then the unthinkable Tyson defeated by KO. It was stunning.
I also have a fuzzy memory that Chris Jackson and Gerald Glass both went the frick off in an LSU/Ole Miss game the same night but I might be mistaken on it being the same night.

Many will disagree, but I believe if Tyson had sticked with Rooney instead of don king’s lackeys, he would’ve retired undefeated. He would’ve beaten Douglas, Holyfield, Lewis, Bowe if he remained in shape and motivated. He was not the same fighter after getting with don king, and lost most of his skill after the 4 year layoff due to prison

This is correct. Tyson was not very good at surrounding himself with the right people, but considering where he came from, it's hard to blame him.

Just curious...is the PA for Pennsylvania? If so, what part?
I worked in Norristown for 7 years and will be headed to Phoenixville next week.

I take exception to the Pistons example. All 5 starters made the all star team as starters that year. They weren’t under dogs in my opinion. Also, Chauncey Billups aka mr big shot was the de facto leader of that team not Big Ben. It’s a shame that group only got a single title.

I remember Charlie Steiner being the one to break it during a SportsCenter. He stumbled on the words a bit.

I watched it live and was the only one in my house. My parents were at my grandparents’ house and I called them up after a few rounds and told them to put it on HBO, NOW… Mike Tyson’s going to get beat tonight!
They were like, yeah, sure…
And it happened. Pandemonium.
