I was too little when Buster knocked out Tyson but I remember how big that was as I got older. Tyson being the most feared man on the planet, how did the world react when Buster won and made Tyson human?

Imagine if social media and 24/7 coverage existed back then.

It was like when the 2003 Patriots beat the Rams, when Maryland Baltimore County beat UVA, when the Ben Wallace Pistons beat the Lakers, when LeBron scored 25 straight points in the overtime playoff game in 2007, when that gymnast impaled himself on the vault apparatus,* and when LaVar Arrington hurdled the line to block a field goal all in one.

*

It was a strange fight. You could definitely tell that Tyson wasn't his usual self and that his training staff had him unprepared.

Tyson had moved away from the training staff that had brought him up. I think D'Amato had died in '85 and Kevin Rooney and Teddy Atlas had been fired. Aaron Snowell and Jay Bright were one of his crew and were training him. Never good to have a yes-man hanger-on training you. Hell, they didn't even have the proper tools in his corner to manage a swelling eye. It was real minor league stuff.

Tyson's outside life was starting to bleed in as well with Robin Givens, which is never good for focus. End of the day, you could see he wasn't sharp.

Even with all that said, it was supposed to be a tune up type fight with a nobody and was epically unbelievable. Seeing Tyson stumbling around, dazed, looking for his mouth guard just didn't compute. I was younger, but in High School and as far as sports go, one of the most memorable things I've ever seen.

I was in college and still awake when ESPN broke in to announce it. Everyone was stunned. Tyson was the immovable object and won fights before he even stepped in the ring. It was a major shocking sports event.

The only other athletes in my lifetime who had that aura that the game was over before it began were Jordan in the Finals, Montana/Brady in Super Bowls, and a few others in their primes of their sport (Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Edwin Moses, Graf, Tiger, Serena, Gretzky, and a few others. But that Tyson loss was a shocker.

Will never forget, when doing the preview of the fight, Larry Merchant was at the fish market and said…When all is said and done…Douglas is just another fish at the fish market.

I remember where I was when I found out. I was actually in the Ag Center, working the yearly livestock event late that night when we saw the result on TV. We were all just stunned. The baddest man in the planet had been knocked out. No one expected that. It was crazy.

I can’t even imagine how social media today would handle a similar event now.

I was 11 or 12 and Tyson was like this invincible force that would never be bested. Then he was and it was like “holy shite!!”

It was something to behold.

I was 9 years old, but remember it like it was yesterday. My buddies and I thought Mike was invincible. Broke our damn hearts. We were so obsessed with Mike Tyson's Punch Out on NES and on that day, we now knew Little Mac could beat Tyson at the end of the game.

Here's the breakdown

75% expressing shock and amazement (of that 75%, half of them would not know what boxing is or have ever seen a bout but wanted to be a part of it.)

9% express that they knew it would happen because Tyson made some obscure mis-step that they are speculating on or because they would claim Buster Douglas was secretly not a tomato can.

6% would claim it was fixed with varying degrees of specificity, but all with the passion of 9000 fiery suns

5% would focus on Don King, Don King observations, or Don King jokes (as they should)

2% would react to the reaction and say that it wasn't worth the attention

2% would comment on the trunks and the color of the gloves, the decor of the arena or the celebrities in attendance.

1% would decry boxing as violent and savage

If it happened today, 45% of social media reaction from 1% of all users would focus on branding, what it means to Tyson's brand, and what is Douglas' brand. We are all worse off for it.

I was in basic training and the drill sergeants came into the barracks and told us Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson and absolutely no one believed them. They had to be fricking with us. Tyson was invincible at the time.

Tyson won.Buster was on the canvas for about 12 seconds but it was a super slow count.

Tyson was supposedly out partying hard the night before the fight. It was obvious that he didn’t take the fight seriously and it cost him that invincible aura that he had at the time

Buster was inspired to win the fight in honor of his mother.
She was only 46 when she died from complications of a stroke weeks prior to the fight.
Buster, motivated, in the best shape of his life, was a HUGE 42:1 underdog.
After a 10th round KO win over Tyson, Buster would face Evander Holyfield six months later.
Buster came in to the title bout overweight, out of shape.
Holyfield knocked him out in the 3rd round.

Nope. It's a 10 count, not ten seconds. That's why Tyson and King lost the appeal. Counts are rarely aligned to actual time. You have to beat the count, not a stopwatch.

Rewatch it, Buster was also waiting on the canvas ready to go when the count got near 10. It's not like he was out and trying to recover.
