Tyson was a good defensive fighter up until the moment he hooked up with Don King and ousted his original crew. He was always going to have trouble with taller fighters with a strong jab like a Lennox Lewis, though.

Prime Holmes dispatches Iron Mike pretty comfortably, IMO.

I don’t think Tyson ever beats Holyfield no matter when they would have fought. I doubt he ever beats Lennox Lewis and he would have had to fight a perfect fight to beat Bowe.

Tyson would have destroyed Holyfield circa 1988. Destroyed him.

Tyson was always going to have trouble with Lewis.

Fight the perfect fight to beat Bowe? Get tf outta here.

Sure. Tyson always wins "fantasy" fights. Holyfield would have simply exposed him earlier if Douglas hadn't.

Holyfield was stronger, better chin & recuperative abilities, controls the ring better & would completely fustrate Tyson just like he did when he dominated him twice, as an underdog , who people thought was shot. Only in Tyson fans wet dreams does he ever " destroy" Holyfield.

Looking at both of the fights I don't know what an early Tyson would've done differently that would've drastically changed anything. Holyfield didn't have a glaring weakness, and Tyson had some difficulty with lesser fighters, even in that late 80s era.

He was the most technically sound fighter Tyson ever faced, and he wasn't scared of Tyson. It never appeared that he was ever close to being in trouble in their two fights. If Tyson would've steam rolled him 8 years earlier you would expect Tyson to at least challenge him in those fights.

No one ever steam-rolled Holyfield. The earliest anyone got Holyfield out of there was Riddick Bowe in round 8. Tyson lost significant steam in the later rounds with only one KO after round 7. Really Holyfield was his nightmare matchup in multiple ways.

I disagree. That jab of prime Holmes was perfection. Tyson always had problems with such a jab.

Finally watched first Holyfield fight. Reminded of Zaire in how he repeatedly tied up Tyson just as Ali didn't George. Had no fear at all and treated him like it. Kind of like after Ashe beat Connors, suddenly he was my mortal

Tyson mentally did not know what to do. He wasn't particularly good at adjustments during a fight.

Impossible to explain the aura Tyson had before that fight.

That's why i bring up Connors. Had the same aura during 74 when he should've had the gram slam.

Tyson fanboys are as bad as the Bruce Lee ones. Mike was a quintessential bully, and probably the mentally weakest fighter of all time. If his opponent wasn't scared of him he had problems - if not full blown meltdowns. Holyfield and Lennox Lewis weren't afraid of him. I guarantee you if he would have ever hooked up with Holmes in his prime that Larry wouldn't have been, either. That strong jab of Holmes' would have worked Mike until Larry sized him up to unload the right.

King was the devil of boxing. He could make you rich but you had to sell your soul to him. Tyson was never the same.
