Two small market teams made it to the WS. And Tampa has been good for a while. That’s the definition of moneyball, smart guy. The dodgers payroll was more than Tampa, Milwaukee and Cleveland COMBINED. Say something else smart.

It's an outlier. The league is still a mess. When was the last time a team with a low payroll won the WS? 2003?

Your trolling is sad.

The fact that the rays have the lowest payroll in the MLB and can still make it to the world series while being in the AL East is fricking incredible. The Brewers are just an incredible team, and not taking Game 1 or 2 killed our chances.

There really isn't a flaw with that club right now, they're hitting and can pitch.

Royals made 2 WS appearances and won 1 doing it.

Money Ball isn’t designed to win the World Series. It’s designed to be competitive.

You said it best, they don’t understand what Moneyball is. If they can read, they should read the book. There are guys who command millions who also fit the mold. The athletics couldn’t afford their stars, cheap owners or whatever, so they found guys who had some similar stats, like On Base Percentage.

You realize the Red Sox broke the curse with Bill James and analytics and money ball philosophies in 2004???

This is only half true. That team had multiple superstars. They used sabermetric philosophies to supplement the roster. Not build it out.

In the last 20 years, the Rays have the 4th best winning percentage in all of MLB. They have 3 AL pennants....there are a bunch of teams that spend way more that would trade places with the Rays, WS Banner or not.

Given their payroll, you could argue that they are one of the best run organizations in major professional sports, fan attendance aside.

Wow. Brew Crew sweeps Dodgers and Rays.

They should probably throw the game tonight so they can win it at home and not have to celebrate in that awful stadium that won’t be full

how fricking dumb are you?

you understand the brewers are doing the same thing right?

and ok....even if a big money team won the WS every year

wtf do you expect small market teams to do...never try and compete? never try and find market inefficiencies? Just give up and never try to be better?

such a dumbass take by one of the dumbest posters on all of TD

How did the analytics of the pitching/hitting matchups in this series look? Probably favored the Brewers.
Moneyball type analytics are looking at numbers over a season and getting good value. Not sure if translates to team vs team in winner takes all series. But can’t say the analytics are useless if the team wins the AL vs some of the biggest payrolls!

Being as successful as they were with the resources available, the A's analytic approach was beyond successful. A World Series apperance for a team like Tampa is a massive victory.

Everytime I see Pat Murphy on TV it looks like he's about to punch somebody in the face.

I hope it's not me.

Moneyball is hard to compete with teams with massive payrolls.

According to baseball-reference.com, this season will be the first time a team in the lower half payrolls had won the world series since the 2003 Marlins.
