Did you not watch the playoff games? They were SOLD OUT and the ratings were high.
Keep expanding and they will not be
NDSU had a half empty stadium for some of their early round playoff games once their fans got bored with winning

24 is way too far.
I actually like 12 even though I expected to hate it. I think 16 might even be better, as unintuitive as that probably is, because it doesn't add another round - it just shoves the pity invites over to play the top-4 seeds in round 1 and creates more interesting first-round games among the next-8. And obviously I think shrinking to 8 has a ton of merit too.
But anything that adds another round is foolishness IMO. Adding another round that has even fewer of the top teams in it is just dumb. And I know I saw that they were going to do away with most conference auto-bids, but I really strongly suspect nonetheless that they're going to smuggle auto-bids for all conferences into the final version. Maybe I'm wrong there, but don't tell me you can't see them doing it lol.

Tweak it? They will never reduce the field once it gets expanded. So you will always have first round matchups with a barely ranked team getting blown out by a top 10 team. Unless they expand to 32, then you can have unranked teams blown out by top 10 teams in the first round

I knew this shite would happen, which is why I was so against starting a playoff system from the beginning. I liked the BCS. I was okay with the 4 team playoff, but I knew it was a slippery slope.
Now it’s just absurd. Basically every team in the top 25 will make the playoffs. I hate this stupid shite.

I greatly hope this blows up in their faces and viewership collapses.

hilarious. All the people in here bitching about more college football.
No, the bitching is about the quality of football and the overall product. I guess tuning into a 60% full Orange Bowl between Texas Tech and Oregon will be the norm. At this point, just pick 24 teams and throw them in some sterile practice bubble and let them battle it out.

Or just stop using these bowls for playoffs and play at on campus sites of the higher seed. But then you’d have soft bitches complaining about the cold weather and how unfair it is.

. The vast majority of fans want the playoff expansion.
But what the vast majority want is sane system where all teams have a chance to get via winning your conference like every single other playoff is set up.
They are going to give us some stupid arse shite where it's one G6 champ that gets an auto bid and everything else goes to the SEC, Big 10, ACC, and Big 12 which is flat out fricking ridiculous in a 24 team field. If it's just 8 or maybe even 12? Ok sure maybe just one. But 24? GTFO.

You think more people are tuning in for the music city or Outback bowl than a playoff game between those teams where the winner advances to play a top 8 team?

Heck, the old guard stood in the way of #1 vs. #2 for 70 years.
That's not true at all.
From the 1920s all the way through to about the mid-60s it was all about winning your conference, beating your rival, and enjoying the night life in Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, or New Orleans prior to playing in a high vis bowl game on New Years Day. You don't start seeing talk about a potential playoff until the mid-to-late 70s and even then it's not until the split national championship seasons of 1990 and 1991 that talk really began to heat up for a post-season +1 model. That's how you got the Bowl Coalition, the Bowl Alliance, and finally the Bowl Championship Series.
In short...it wasn't until after conferences got their own TV deals, and the rise of ESPN, that you started to see a push for a more standardized way of producing a national champion.

Alabama would have made the playoffs the last 18 seasons in a 24 team playoff.
Notre Dame would have made the playoffs 9 times in the last 10 years instead of 3 times if it were a 12 team playoff the last 10 seasons.
Iowa (!!!) would have made the 24 team playoff 5 times in the last 10 seasons vs. zero times in a 12 team playoff.
12 teams is too many in my opinion, but what are we seriously doing?
The Houston Cougars, who had 1 ranked win over the 24th ranked Arizona State (finished the regular season at 8-4), and lost to Texas Tech by 24, TCU, and 4-8 (!!!!!) West Virginia would have made the playoffs. They were 50th in FPI and had the 70th ranked SOS.
Tulane wouldn't have needed an auto qualifier last year. They lost to Ole Miss by 35 and a 7-6 UTSA team. They were 54th in FPI.
In 2023, Oklahoma State lost to (7-6) South Alabama 33-7. They lost to (6-7) UCF 45-3. That team would have made the 24 team playoffs.
You can keep looking thru years and find comical teams that would have made the playoffs. This is so embarrassing and there are so many people that should be ashamed of themselves.

They have to do this, the programs are bleeding money. You’ve got some programs with an 8 figure deficit. It’s not sustainable long term but it’s a tourniquet on the wound for now. The big teams will have to separate and form a league eventually.

i absolutely hate the idea of 24 teams.
the perfect solution would've been to reduce it from 12 to 10. that would've preserved the jeopardy and 'do or die' feeling of regular season games which college fball is known for. one loss you can get away with but two and you're out of contention most likely.

I think what's getting lost in the shuffle here, winning the conference isn't important.
Remember last year's playoff final, where Miami had a shot to win the title on their last drive?
Miami was the only ACC team in the playoffs.
Miami didn't even make the conference championship, that was between Duke (who won), and Virginia (who was the ACC 1 seed).
Neither Duke nor Virginia even got into the playoffs.

That one team ranked number 25 that doesn’t make the CFP gonna be pisssssed. ESPN will be debating the merits of number 24 vs number 25 and the “others receiving votes” for days
