No way a fake slide should be legal. If you even look at the QB wrong when he slides it’s a 15 yarder

Defensive players will have no clue what to do when it comes to a scrambling QB

Yea that needs to be nixed. I mean hats off to him for thinking of that but it either needs to be mixed before it catches on or they need to soften up on the targeting calls

It should have been blown dead. There’s a rule in where the ball is spotted when the QB begins his slide. He began to slide.

I agree, seems to me that’s a perfect application of the rule. He gave himself up.

When will then be now?

This one specially feels like a bad one to try to change the rules for. Defenders went flat footed from 15 yards away. It’s not like he put them in a position where they had to try to avoid contact in anyway

It was just a frickin terrible defensive play

Unless that play wasn't reviewable there doesn't need to be a new rule. The refs were supposed to blow it dead.

Exactly. I doubt there will be a new rule. I bet we hear next year that an "emphasis" was made on blowing plays like that dead if defenders pull up.

I truly don’t understand why y’all want them to blow that play dead.

What?

We have neutered defensive players to such a degree where if they touch any qb at all after he begins his slide we throw a flag. So allowing a qb to fake a slide is just beyond unfair when defenses literally have to stop playing to avoid a penalty when he begins to give himself up

That 2nd video was damning of the "fake slide," why even do that when you didn't have a defender within 15 yards?

Looked almost more like a sneaky stutter step to me. Like the dude wanted to somehow “juke” but didn’t know what to do with his body.

Agree that it’s a precarious situation for the refs and defense. Whether the QB exploited the loophole is hard to say for sure.

Because defenders are being taught to literally stop playing when a QB begins to slide. His entire body shifts like he’s about to slide. That’s why you see the backside defender literally stop and then go once he faked

Because if he is hit after the the action he began its a penalty, and had he completed the side the ball would have been spotted where he did what he did.

Everything in the rule book says the play should have been over.

NFL already has that rule in place.

The easiest way to erase all doubt is to eliminate the sliding rule altogether. No player in college football should be awarded special status once they become a ball carrier.
