The easiest way to erase all doubt is to eliminate the sliding rule altogether. No player in college football should be awarded special status once they become a ball carrier.
Special status? Every single player who has the ball can give themselves up with a slide. QBs are usually just the only ones who do it.

Mike Leach had his qb attempt a fake kneel. Refs ruled "simulating a kneel equated to a kneel". LINK
Giving yourself up does afford an understanding. In the NFL down by contact rule doesn't apply on a slide or kneel. It's not like spiking the ball where it's a tactical move with exceptions in the rules. The slide exists based on the understanding of giving yourself up. You can't have that being manipulated against the defense, it's unsafe and unsporting.
A runner faking to go out of bounds, and the defender letting up is a similar issue that has arisen. Especially with how close they call late hits nowadays.

Such a rule would be like saying no one should fake anything, ever.
‘Can’t pump fake, QB - might make the defender jump or hesitate,’
‘Can’t juke, RB - might make the defender move in the wrong direction.’
‘Can’t fake a punt/FG, ST - might cause defenders to be out of position.’
I could go on; arguments undermining a brilliant fake are stupid…

That can’t be legal. Next one the guy gets his head taking off.

There is no way a rule could account for that. It was a sick move, especially in the middle of a live action play. Just tip your cap and move on.

Does the no fake fair catch rule preclude anyone from doing anything you just listed?
You’re allowed to trick the opposition, just not using rules designed/defined by the offensive player giving himself up so that defenses can’t/won’t hit him.

So you'd legitimately call a penalty on/rule down the QB on that play?
Posted on 12/5/21 at 6:50 am to GRTiger
Yes, why wouldn’t you? Had someone hit him while he was in the process of that it would have been a penalty. And had the slide been completed it would have been marked down at the spot where this fake began.

Because it's impossible and probably the dumbest rule suggestion I've ever heard of.
Should it be illegal to run towards the sideline and then change direction?

Believing that play should have been called dead is ridiculous. Saying it out loud is literally retarded.
At no point was his body actually in the act of sliding. He faked it, it was good. Wanting to immediately change the sport because of one slick move makes me hate you.

I’m sorry you’re so confused.

You said there would have been a penalty if anyone hit the QB on this play. I suspect I am not the confused one here. It's like you're crying about the pussification of football while also demanding it be pussified. That is what confuses me.
Posted on 12/5/21 at 7:22 am to GRTiger
I’m saying the runner shouldn’t be able to hide behind or deceive the defense using the protection afforded to him by the “pussified” rule. Again, you are totally lost here as evidenced by your ignorant comment about running toward the sideline.

The ball is dead when a ball carrier simulates placing a knee on the ground or he begins a feet-first slide. This play may not meet the letter of the rules, it meets the spirit. The defense is clearly placed a disadvantage. This action should cause the ball to become dead.

I am 100% behind my position that this play ran as it should have. I can't imagine someone disagreeing with that and not outing themselves as a fool. It's preposterous. You're less than one step away from calling for a rule that a player should be down for even thinking about going down.

Dude. If you don’t understand that when he began to slide—he clearly did by posture begin to slide—he was immediately deemed untouchable by the defense and protected by rule and that by rule he should have been down right there, then nothing we say here will help you. You can’t have it both ways. Either you can slide or remove the slide and let people hit you when you run until you are actually down.

Pickett has already admitted that he started the slide and you can see him slowing down, tucking his right leg and extending his left leg. He pulled up after seeing defenders let up on the play.

Just implementing the rules that are already in place. Mike Leach blew up because a fake kneel was ruled correctly since a simulated kneel is the same as an actual kneel. Kenny Pickett simulated a slide therefore should be considered a slide and giving himself up. The Wake Forest defenders shouldn't have given up like they did when they were 10 yards off of him.
