AP is reporting that Busch became unresponsive while in the racing simulator that Chevrolet has in Concord, NC, on Wednesday and was transported to the hospital.

That GM tech center is only about 5 years old. It sits on property that's part of the Hendrick Racing compound just down the road from Charlotte Motor Speedway.

My wife had a conference in Concord in 2019 at the Embassy Suites right across the street. I took one of the days she was in the conference and hit up a ton of the race shop - Hendrick, Gibbs, Stewart-Hass, Roush, the old DEI building, JR Motorsports, and Kyle Busch Motorsports.

KBM was in this little industrial park behind some railroad tracks, but it was cool to walk in and see the 51 truck with the Rowdy name decal above the window.

This is a Dale Sr./Fireball Roberts cataclysmic loss moment for the sport. The only difference is it didn’t happen on the track.

People respected Kyle. They may not have liked him all the time but they damn sure respected him.

Just saw an interview with Joey Logano from a Charlotte TV station. He looked shell shocked, he talked about the racing stuff that all the tributes are mentioning, but it kind of hit home when he said, “Our kids played together.”

It's this weird mix of Dale Sr's death in that you can't imagine a race without him on the track, fighting for position, mixing it up. But there's also that strange disbelief like when Davey and Alan died- if a racer is going to die you figure it'll be on the track like Sr (or Adam Petty, Clifford Allison), not a plane/helo crash or sudden medical issue.

This one today hit me like Dale Sr. did back in the day. Literally get a Fox News alert on it, I didn't believe it. Didn't believe it until I saw it on ESPN and the NASCAR website. I think this will be one of those moments. Just like I could tell you exactly where I was when I learned Dale Sr. died, I feel I'll be able to tell people exactly where I was when I learned Kyle Busch died.

People who don't follow NASCAR won't understand how big of a deal this is. This would be like Tom Brady or Drew Brees passing away during the NFL season while they were still playing.

And the fact he raced for Richard Childress and RCR of all teams. I can only imagine what Richard Childress is feeling right now. Has to be a mix of just utter shock and sadness, as well as some really bad deja vu to Dale Sr.'s death.

This hits similar to when Kobe died.

Having the TV on the background, hearing the news, thinking I'm mishearing it, and rushing to check online to see it was all true.

Sad day for Nascar fans, and sports in general.

Agree with both of you. I was still working when the news broke, so I immediately turned on NASCAR Radio on Sirius, and have been listening most of the night.

Tonight has an extra heavy Earnhardt feel about it, yet it was another tragic off-track death that the sport has unfortunately experienced too much of.

Maybe it's because Rowdy is my age and I basically watched his entire career, and even perhaps it being an unknown illness rather than an accident, but this one has floored me more than the others.

Yeah I'm 42, so just a year older than Rowdy. Just in the last year, we had a family friend pass away from a heart attack out of nowhere at 42. Literally was eating at a restaurant with his wife and kids, fell over. There were some nurses there but there wasn't much they could do. Besides that, my best friend, had an extended family member who passed away a few months ago at 48. The individual had a stroke, again out of nowhere. Now Kyle Busch, gone at 41 out of nowhere. It's been a real gut punch for me the last year, kind of realizing my own mortality. Realizing, in a hard way, that tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

Like you, Rowdy is around my age and I watched him his entire NASCAR career. I only casually follow NASCAR now, not like I did from 1992 - 2010, but still follow it. I agree the feelings now are very similar to when Earnhardt passed away.

I think it hits you harder when it's someone around your age. It's more of a gut punch and it's a hard reminder of your own mortality.

And while it's not important right now, I wonder how the 600 will be. The Coca-Cola 600 is usually one of my favorite races of the year. But my enthusiasm for the race now is completely in the tank. I have to imagine the drivers must feel the same way.

I know the mentality in NASCAR is "the show must go on", but I do wonder if they will seriously consider maybe moving the Coca-Cola 600 to at least Monday (since it is a holiday and a lot of people have off) to give drivers an additional day to process and grieve.

I am 1 year younger than you at 42 years of age. The gentleman previously stated he is also 41 years old.

Doubtful. They have TV contracts that they will fulfill. It won’t be the same but like you said, the show will go on. At least the drivers are home this week and aren’t thousands of miles from home. This race will hit different. I’d imagine that the #8 will withdraw.

I’m stunned! I feel so bad for his family. I read a really bad sinus infection plus the pressure from the g forces may have made it a lot worse. I don’t know if that’s true or not.

But the above theory about pneumonia and turning septic is plausible. It happened to me and I didn’t even feel that bad so I don’t want to go to the doctor. My wife forced me to go and they admitted me immediately. I probably wouldn’t have made it two more days. And it was going on for about two weeks so that time frame may be possible.

Woke up this morning still feeling this one. I can count on one hand the number of celebrity deaths that have really bothered me. His age and sweet family that are left behind….he had so much talent. Just tragic is all I can say, and I’m truly sad I won’t get to see him drive again. Racing won’t be the same without Rowdy.
