So, the new Michigan coach says this is unsustainable, as he looks out at his QB practicing.
Just a reminder, Underwood is at LSU unless Michigan pulls that last minute 12 mil NIL deal. He'd been a commit for a long time, and had been recruiting others.
That's probably the reason LSU has gone all-in this year, we're not gonna get sniped like that again.
And it's also probably the reason he's at Michigan now, instead of Utah. He didn't want to get left in the cold.

Clinical definition of "Buyers Remorse" after dropping $12m on the next DJU. Baws with a 84-month note on a F-250 at 12% are getting a far better deal.

It’s sustainable for the programs that have the money and are willing to spend it. For example if they wanted to be a school like Stanford could be an NIL juggernaut. Due to oil and banking the Texas schools have a huge advantage for NIL with basically unlimited budgets. I’m not sure even Michigan and Ohio State have that luxury.

It’s not even that. Many of these guys despite being super rich will never own an NFL Franchise so the next best thing is to essentially ‘buy’ their Alma maters football or basketball program.

He's not wrong.
Once again, lawyers frick everything up.

Want to blame someone? ESPN talking heads started all this. From fake stories about starving athletes to constant talk about changing how the CFB champions are crowned. Ever since they gained a monopoly on sports, every change started from a commentary on one of their shows. From banning the shift, the NASCAR Chase, to now the ever expanding College playoffs AND NIL. All former ESPN talking points

Bumble, I agree. It’s also all at the feet of the NCAA who would not enforce their rules which led a small violation turning into Herschel driving a Camaro and Cam getting 200K. This was all inevitable.
As the fan of a team who did not succeed in the previous era I am all for this new NIL and portal era. If this era means Stanford, Indiana, Miami types win every Natty because of unlimited funds then so be it. At least everyone will know why and won’t pretend it’s on the level.

Sorry, but the guy at Michigan has no right to complain, especially since he just chose Michigan.
He isn’t complaining. I think he is star struck about the money, connections, etc he gets to deal with.

2019 LSU the last true National Champion

If you just regulate the transfer portal like it once was ten years ago it will all fix itself

I wonder what would happen if the Ivies decide to go head first in? Could the Harvard / Yale game become a national television event one day?

None of this matters without overzealous fans who care only about winning. The fans want to blame everyone but themselves. Like alcoholics going down to the liquor store and blaming the clerk, the supplier, the truck driver, the stock boy, etc., for their problems.

Forgive me, but I forgot the part where the fans paid $12.5 million for a head coach. Now, if you want to talk about overzealous boosters who care only about winning I'll agree with you. But don't lay the current state of college football squarely on the fans. It wasn't the fans who sued the NCAA in 1983 to break their monopoly on television rights. It wasn't the fans who decided to expand the Southeastern Conference in 1990 so that we could play an extra game in December. It wasn't the fans who sued the NCAA in 2009 over name, image, and likeness. And it sure as hell wasn't the fans who signed these multi-billion-dollar TV deals with ESPN, FOX, and CBS.
You can say that fan interest drove many of the above, but the fans themselves did not make these decisions. They were made for us by the higher ups within the sport. Many of us did not ask for any of this.

None of that will help him if they deem him not good enough to throw resources behind

Fan obsession is the foundation of it all.

That's like saying the Big Bang is the foundation of the Universe. Without the Big Bang, we wouldn't have the Universe; without fans there wouldn't be sports. The subject is a little more granular and nuanced than that.

And my Saturdays will only continue to free up space for other things to do.
I watched a lot less college football last season than ever in my life. Even with Auburn getting a new coach, I have little interest or intrigue in the upcoming season.
What makes...made...college football great was rivalries between regional teams, pageantry through the cultural practices of each university, and relational connections between the fans and the players. Players didn't just sign a contract to get paid by a university--they committed to and selected a university. They had to go to class and strong programs could also boast about their players' academic successes. Sure, there was shady shite going on underneath the surface, but even if players were getting bags of cash through the back door, they were still present as a member of your alma mater's community for 3-4 years.
What sucks the most is that the casual fan doesn't care. Ratings are up. Revenue is up. TV is up. Advertisements are up. Gambling is up.
Football purists like myself are left in the cold. Which is fine by me if the product sucks.

Yep. I'm in the same boat as you. I don't mean to rub it in, but even though we've won six straight over you guys, it sure as hell hits differently than it would have had this streak been achieved 20 years ago. When you guys were racking up win after win over us in the early-00s, you felt that streak across the entire state of Alabama.
Nowadays, even though we have just as impressive a streak over y'all, it feels like everyone is saying, "Meh."
