In what world is Mike Trout a better athlete than Lionel Messi? Not this one.

The Mike Trout love on this board is insane.

“Trout has a higher WAR than Messi!!!”

I mean, that's not necessarily true, either about Messi or Ronaldo. Those Mourinho Ronaldo teams and Zidane Ronaldo teams were most definitely built around Ronaldo. Tiki-Taka coincided with Messi's emergence, but he's taken a massive amount of the playmaking responsibilities since Xavi and Iniesta fell off. Both teams have had to build their teams around their superstars because modern football requires all 10 outfield players to defend, and Messi and Ronaldo generally don't defend, but that change has been gradual for both players. In 2009, it's hard to argue that either team was built around each player specifically. As the years wore on, they became the focal point more and more.

From a pure athletic standpoint, Messi isn’t close to the most athletic soccer player in the world. However from a soccer skills standpoint, he is the greatest to ever play the game imo.
And people need to realize how many people play soccer worldwide, literally since they could walk, every day. Compare that to the number that play baseball, hockey, basketball football etc. I bet it’s more than the rest of the sports mentioned combined.

So getting players that complement the best player in the world is a knock against Messi?

Do you think Juventus doesn’t think of what best serves Ronaldo when acquiring players?

Btw, Messi leads La Liga in goals AND assists, AGAIN.

Well, he can run faster, jump higher, has more power, and has better agility all the while being about 40 lbs heavier than Messi. Literally every way an athlete can be measured Trout is superior. Trout is just an example, he’s probably not the best overall athlete in MLB. He’s probably not a better athlete than the average NFL safety. You think Messi is a better athlete than Adrian Peterson in his prime? Than Ladian Tomlinson in his prime? Than Ed Reed? Than Troy Polamalu? Barry Sanders? Lebron James? He is more skilled, no doubt, but he’s not more athletic, and it’s really not even close.

Come on man

He's the only athlete I can think of who was dominant to the statistical degree that Messi is. Unless I'm missing someone.

Didnt say it was a knock.

Just said that the team was built for HIM to succeed and allow him to do whatever he wants. Ronaldo just went to Juventus and is dominating in italy.

Hit me up when Ronaldo has been at Juventus for like 15+ years.

Thats cool, Ronaldo isnt in la liga anymore so there isnt anyone else to compete with him.

If Messi went somewhere else and dominated like he does at barcelona then he'd be #1, but he hasnt and won't and I dont blame him.

The problem is that you don't consider stamina as an athletic trait, and that's the most important trait for any soccer player. Fast-twitch athletes are selected against in soccer due to traditional training method (read The Sportsgene for a more thorough example). And I'd be surprised if Trout was more agile than Messi. Messi has amazing balance, change of direction, and agility.

This isn't true. Xavi, Iniesta, and Busquets allowed him to focus only on attacking, but they weren't built for HIM specifically to succeed. They were organized so that any attackers in the team could succeed. It's only in trying to find replacements, toward the middle part of this decade, that they had to consider how to fit them in with Messi. Given this, Messi has been remarkably versatile. He's played with Villa, Suarez, Neymar, Henry, Eto'o, Coutinho and Pedro, among others. Describe for me what all those players have in common?

It's likely that even if Ronaldo was in the league, Messi would be leading the league in assists.

Sure their physical dominance over him matters and should be factored in. But you are talking about most skilled person out of the relatively small percentage of physical freaks mostly born in America vs the most skilled person out of the 3 billion or so men born outside of America.

Sorry is this a topic about the greatest athlete or the most skilled human?

Kinda hard to compare skill when pretty much anyone you put messi up against plays a completely different sport with a completely different kind of skill set that is required for that sport. Athletic ability is different as it can actually be measured.

Spinning? So you think you wouldnt bring in players that supported one of the best players in the world over the course of 15 years?

All Ronaldo did was get shopped out every year to see if anyone would pay a ridiculous fee. Florentino Perez is a dumbass for pissing Ronaldo off.

I want to punch Perez on the face because we don't get to see the Ronaldo/Real vs Messi/Barcelona so clasicos anymore.

Thats the real shame here.
