re: Bloomberg: The American Middle Class Is Shrinking, and That’s OK

The problem is that when you talk about frugality you get labeled as out of touch and a stupid Boomer (and I am not even a Boomer).
People are underwater because of the cost of education, insurance, and housing along with declining wages.
It's fine to talk about frugality but it seems like it inevitably leads to unserious people derailing the thread with arguments about how the path to economic security is buying Walmart brand coffee and cancelling Netflix. That's like a 400 pound person taking the stairs instead of the elevator and changing nothing else and expecting to lose 250 pounds in a year. Not only does the math not add up, it's so far off it almost doesn't even matter.
re: I don't why LSU has to hire a current head coach

Their defense immediately got worse as soon as Muschamp wasn't looking over his shoulder as co-DC. He's not what Lanning was.
I don't think many people look at actual resumés and experience, they just see headlines. There is no Kirby Smart or Brent Venables or Dan Lanning out there right now. Hartline had one season as OC, was immediately demoted, and is now being given a second shot with results TBD. Ryan Day and Marcus Freeman were internal promotions who didn't have to build anything; they got to take over programs running on all cylinders.

re: With Drink seemingly emerging as a real candidate, why is there no Dillingham talk?
Posted by Nobelium on 11/13/25 at 7:31 pm to Mingo Was His NameO
I'm sure it was. There's been a lot of weirdness with this entire era of LSU football. If the reports are true though, and Kelly was bringing in top 10 high school classes and a #1 portal class without trying, then it only shows how desirable LSU really is.
I don't disagree, I was simply addressing the Drinkwitz vs Dillingham comparison. I don't think either of them are a first option type for LSU.
Brian Kelly in 3 and a half seasons at LSU went 34-14 with 3 bowl wins, an SEC championship appearance, and a Heisman winner after taking over a program in far worse shape than Miles or Orgeron did. Yet if you read the posts here you'd think he went 5-7 for 4 years straight. LSU didn't fire Kelly for that to then turn around and make Eli Drinkwitz or Kenny Dillingham or Alex Golesh or Jon Sumrall their main target.

Much greater risk. Drinkwitz is in his 7th season as a HC, 6th at the P5 level, has an obvious upward trajectory at Missouri where he's going for his third straight 10+ win season at a second-tier school in the SEC. Drinkwitz has proven that he's at least a good coach.
Dillingham is only in his third season as a HC with one awful season, one good season (so far), and one great season where he rode Cam Skattebo to the playoffs in a weak conference. It's much more of a coin flip with that resumé.

re: The Giants have fired Brian Daboll
Posted by Nobelium on 11/11/25 at 10:37 am to RebelTheBear
Daboll has been a disaster as a HC. No two ways about it. He and Kafka have been playing hot-potato with the play-calling for like two seasons now to no effect. At no point during his tenure has the offensive line been even somewhat serviceable. Drove Martindale out to get "his guy" in at DC and the defense immediately went from meh to horrendous. Special teams are a dumpster fire. Jones got out of there, immediately started taking shots at Daboll, and then backed it up by playing far better in year one with the Colts than he ever did under the "QB whisperer." Have started each of the last three seasons looking like the entire team met each other for the first time 30 minutes before kickoff. The Cowboys and Broncos games this year are textbook examples of a badly led, badly coached team finding ways to lose.
Maybe he's a good OC and he admittedly has not been given a lot of talent to work with but the Giants are 11-33 since the 2022 season. No aspect of the team other than their rookie QB is currently functioning at even a competent level.

Going after the biggest name out there is not fiscally smart, nor does it really ever work out.
Seven out of eleven national championships in the CFP era have been won by coaches who were the biggest name out there when they were hired (Meyer at Ohio State, Saban at Alabama, Smart at Georgia, Harbaugh at Michigan). Kalen Deboer was the biggest name out there when he was hired. Lanning and Cristobal were massive names when they were hired.

Kelly made the BCS national championship along with the 4-team CFP twice, neither of which Freeman would have accomplished so far. Freeman also got handled in the national championship last year by an Ohio State team that would not have kept it within 3 scores of 2012 Alabama, 2018 Clemson, or 2020 Alabama.
Notre Dame is objectively not doing better than they were with Kelly.
