I do think soccer’s “global” appeal is sometimes overblown. The EPL is definitely the most international league of any major sport and the World Cup gets astounding viewership, but soccer is primarily a European, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and African venture with some other countries (US, Japan, Korea) putting forth a decent amount of effort as well. In the fifteen largest countries in the world, it is the definitively most popular sport in only five of them (#5, 7, 10, 12, and 14), and only one of those countries is really a traditional powerhouse. Soccer just doesn’t play that big of a role in the immense South or East Asian population nuclei.

Was lucky enough to watch Messi and CR7 play in an El Classico. As much as I dismiss soccer players as well rounded athletes, was awesome watching them play.

Alex Honnold is literally the only person in the world who climbs at the level he does. He's not physically the best climber, but no one can touch him in the mental game, climbing tough pitches without a single mistake for hours on end. There is no one else. There is no soccer player, football player, or basketball player who stands out that much from the crowd.

Yeah but he can’t bench 350 and run a 4.4 so who cares? - all the mouth breathing anti-soccer folks ITT

Just kidding, but really, “who is the greatest human athlete ever” is not a very interesting question if you just mean who had the best combination of speed, strength, agility, etc. For one thing, who can define the optimal mix of attributes? For another, as nutrition, science, and money are applied to sport, we will basically be seeing new “greatest ever athletes” on a regular basis.
That’s not very interesting.
When you see a combination of breathtaking skill and elite athleticism (relative to his sport) that lead to championship level results for a long period of time in a sport the whole world plays, that’s interesting, and that’s what you have in Messi.
Comparisons are Tiger Woods, Gretzky (maybe), Jordan, and I guess Ronaldo too.

If Messi had led Argentina to World Cup glory, it would be a slam-dunk.

Frick whoever hired Maradona to coach them in 2014.

No better way to rustle the msb troglodytes than with a soccer thread.

Well done OP

I wanted to see Messi drain that kick so I don’t feel that bad. I started watching around 55 minutes. Liverpool had the ball pretty much the whole time and had numerous attempts to score. As soon as I texted him it all went down hill.

When is the next game? I’ll be sure to set aside some time to send some more texts. Start betting Barca.

No

That would be LeBron. And I'm not really a fan of LeBron or his antics, but I can appreciate his skill

He's the only athlete I can think of who was dominant to the statistical degree that Messi is. Unless I'm missing someone.

I don't know shite about soccer, can someone post some comparables between Messi and Ronaldo?

I didn't realize Messi was that far ahead of Ronaldo and basically anyone.

He's not. Plenty of people prefer Ronaldo.

No one with an ounce of sense thinks anyone other than Gretzky is the GOAT in hockey.

It's mostly his assist record. Ronaldo's has fallen off being the provider as he's much more focused on finishing these days. Messi also plays much further from goal, which makes his stats all that more impressive. In other words, Messi is still scoring more than a goal a game, providing an assist every two games or so, and is playing 10 to 20 yards further back than Ronaldo, who is usually playing either wide left or center forward positions.
