It's Pretty simple. The coaching hires and they have a recruiting hotbed in the north texas area. They also get to play in texas multiple times for plenty of exposure in the state. They also have a much easier path to success.

Well for one thing, they’ve had 2 coaches and both us and Nebraska have gone through several

Next time you ever see a UT fan complaint about A&M "opening" the state for SEC schools, remember that they are the sole reason that OU has such large inroads in the DFW area

Thing that hurt Tenn is LSU and UGA getting their act together. Tenn would cherrypick players from both LA and GA
For Nebraska and even Colorado, leaving the Big 12 has really hurt them. Their brand was identified through that conference. Nebraska would have been better off staying connected to Oklahoma.

Getting best transfer QB every season doesn't hurt.

Based on your criteria ole miss should be a powerhouse. Kind of a racist thread.
Facts are racist now? Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Nebraska are unique in the regard mentioned in the OP. Historical powers in small states with a small AA population. Never did I mention that large AA population equates to automatic success, nor did I even infer it. To deny the similarities is ridiculous.
Can you name any other blue blood programs in states with similar demographics? Outside of maybe Notre Dame, it's those 3. 2 of them are shite now.

Take a look at these programs 15-20 years ago and they are remarkably similar.
20 years ago Oklahoma was just hiring Stoops after a decade of sucking, while Tenn and Nebraska were both at their peaks

Proximity to Texas recruits.

The jury is still out on that this year. Fields has been huge for Ohio State.

1. Coaching (duh)
2. Arguably the best AD in the country

Tennessee spent years recruiting places like Louisiana and Florida and Georgia. They've just had beyond horrible leadership

quote:Cable TV is the biggest downfall for Nebraska. Nebraska was one of the teams that always seemed to be on TV every weekend, when there were only 3 channels. So one of selling points to going to Nebraska was the ability to play on TV and win NC's. Neither of those are selling points today.
How has Oklahoma avoided the fate of Nebraska and Tennessee?

The state of TN is much more talent rich than Nebraska or Oklahoma and TN is much closer to a lot more talent. Tennessee's problem is leadership and horrendous hires.
The recruiting proximity talking point has gotten very out of hand.

And their downturn coincided with Saban arriving at LSU and Mark Richt arriving at UGA. Also, the brief Steve Spurrier era at South Carolina probably played a part in keeping them down.
I'm just talking outside influence. They've also stepped on their own dick plenty of times as well.

Stoops put OU on the map. I think Riley can keep up the success, and they can recruit Texas.
Tenn is a mess because of really poor coaching hires and athletic dept problems. If they could clean that up, they should be able to recruit enough talent to regularly compete in the SEC East. Talent isn't coming until they clean up their problems.
Nebraska, that's a more complex issue. The kids who would want to go there, aren't the kids that suceed in today's college football. People say Les lived in the past, Nebraska is much worse. Also, I think moving to the B1G has hurt more than helped. They have no identity there. they are in the easier of the two divisions, so if their new coaches can get some things going, maybe they could be better. But you still have to try to convince kids, other than farm boys, to go to Nebraska.

I clearly said 15-20 years ago numbnuts. 19 years ago OU won the national title, Nebraska lost one a year later, and UT won one two years prior. They were all very very good in the same "era." You knew exactly what I meant

The #1 reason. Tennessee has to play Bama, Georgia, and Florida every year along with the occasional cross-divisional matchup against a top SEC West opponent. Oklahoma has Texas and who else? TCU? Oklahoma State? And even before conference realignment, their competition was uninspiring. Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Colorado were all going through downturns when OU began their run with Stoops. Texas Tech was the third best program in the Big 12 and they were far from being elite. The weaker competition has played a major role in their sustained success.

MS may have a large black population but it produces shite, talent-wise, compared to Louisiana and Alabama. And gets raided of any good talent by every program bordering their state.
That’s a mix of shitty HS programs and poorly run programs at Moo U and Ole Miss right there.
Southern Miss does OK but they are typically dumpster diving for kids in LA and AL who don’t get scholarships to LSU, Bama, or Auburn, not getting a lot of quality in-state talent.

In-state recruiting is the backbone to the success of most college football teams. That is undeniable. Can UT be nationally relevant with a roster made up of 43 kids from Tennessee?
